Costly Costco

It was a good day with an expensive ending!

Teaching:

We got through McCracken spelling this morning and then I had to leave the kids for a stupid meeting. It only took ten minutes as I didn’t have much to say at this time. We also did a patterning sheet where the students had to follow the rules. They got the concept, but so many forgot to actually look at the rules!

We got the rest of the parent gifts finished and sent home✅ another thing off the list.

We did relays in gym again where the children got to choose the Christmas movement. We had a lot of flying angels!

Finally this afternoon we did silent reading/ guided reading and we did a class book. This provided the best moment of the day! The book was comprised of pages that said ” For Christmas I want to give — to —-. One little girl told me she wanted to give love to her family and we had hugs for mom, candy canes for the elf, etc, but then the last page says, ” I want to give alcohol to my dad.”🤣🤣🤣

Exercise:

My teaching buddy doesn’t work on Wednesdays so I was out of there pretty early. I felt like doing nothing but that won’t get me to South Dakota, so I made myself go out for an easy run. It ended up being 5.26km of easy run and it felt good, though I got extremely wet!

Knitting:

I got a few patterns done on my brother’s scarf at lunch and a few rounds done on my sweater tonight. I saw two pretty yarns on Instagram today. One is called ugly Christmas sweater and I love the speckliness of the red, green and cream, but it’s $30 a skein and it’s worsted so I would need several skeins to make a sweater:(. The other is a matched set of small balls of self fading yarn for socks- such gorgeous colours!!!

Shopping:

After a shower and dinner, I picked up my friend and headed for Costco. For those of you worried, she is one of my people as I’m single. Yet again, I spent way too much at Costco and I didn’t even really buy a lot. I did buy myself a lovely new robe that I am already enjoying. I put a ton of stuff back, including a bread maker. The bread maker had a gluten free setting which the lack of one is the reason my mom ended up with my last bread maker. I am just wondering if I would use it enough to make it worth spending money on. If anyone has an opinion, I’d love to hear it!

Have fun!

Trivia Tuesday

It was a pretty good day!

Teaching:

It was a pretty productive day! We got the parent gift wrapped and the card made. It feels great to have that done and then I got the student gifts done after school so I’m feeling much calmer. I don’t think there’s anything else I have to get done by Friday .

Exercise:

I did a 5km with Dennis tonight. The best part of the run was that my NoxGear came and it was dark enough on the way home to be necessary.

Trivia:

It was the last night of the trivia tournament tonight.

In the first round:

Who played the Blues Brothers?

John Belushi and Dan Akroyd

What was the Spice Girls movie?

Spice World

What is the first name of The Rock?

Dwayne

Montreal

What country is closest to the North Pole?

Canada

Name three countries starting with the letter H?

Haiti, Hungary, Honduras

Spell disingenuous

We won the first round with 50 points!🎊🎉

The music round started out really tough with songs that have “ho” said three times. Needless to say, we didn’t know anything. It was then Christmas songs, Christmas babies ( artists born on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day), #1 on Christmas Day, and songs Queen played at Live Aid. The last was probably our best category.

In the Kahoot round we came in second and knew:

What do botanists study?

Plants

When did Charlemagne reign?

500-1000

What bridge doesn’t cross False Creek?

Vanier

Who didn’t Bradley Cooper kiss?

Cameron Diaz, Lady Gaga, Jennifer Laurence, Amy Adams

Cameron Diaz

In which country are Cali and Catahenia?

Columbia

What was the worst NBA team last year?

Golden State Warriors

It was so stressful the last round as we are ten points out of first place.

We knew:

What Friends character has a colour for a last name?

Rachel

Which social network platform isn’t owned by Facebook?

Twitter

Where is Big White?

Kelowna

How many provinces border Hudson Bay?

What artist had the most weeks at #1 in the 2010s?

Drake

We actually got all but two questions right in the final round, and ended up taking

Overall for the twelve week tournament. I’m happy with that:)

Blogmas Day 4

Blogmas is organized by the amazing Abbey. Today’s question is would you rather have holiday decorations up all year or never be able to put them up again.

This is a really tough question as growing up we always decorated the house. I especially liked setting up my Christmas villages, of which I have many! However, since moving out on my own, I don’t put up many decorations at all. Actually quite often I don’t put up any decorations at home. My classroom is always decorated for Christmas in December 1st and by the time I finish with Christmas there, I don’t want to see any at home. I also have often been away come Christmas Day so don’t put up decorations so I don’t have to clean them up when I come back home.

This year I have actually put up a small tree and some lights and some of the decorations I have made over the years. I figure since I’ll be home, I might as well have some holiday cheer. I just wish it could be more festive. I would like a bigger tree and somewhere to put my Christmas villages as right now they stay under my bed.

My Day:

Amazingly I was up and at ’em early for a trip to the gym. I don’t know why I wasn’t seriously tired, but I was raring to go. I met Lyndsay and we got a workout in- treadmill, elliptical, weights and the bosu. It was definitely well rounded. I enjoyed thinking all day of the fact I had already worked out and could just collapse on the couch after school.

My class ended our food bank donation with 369 items. We also got a journal done on Santa. I was slightly ticked that I didn’t get my report cards back until after my prep. I ended up getting part of a couple of jobs done on my prep. I don’t like doing jobs in parts as I feel like it’s too easy to miss something or screw up when I do things in steps over days.

We managed to find a way to play tag today. We used badminton rackets. I was super worried this could go sideways really quickly, but amazingly the kids were awesome at being gentle. It was also great to see them tired out!

This afternoon we made a mini book about Five Little Reindeer. The kids were great!

After school I got my reports copied, collated and stuffed so they are ready to go for Friday.

After getting home, I have done nothing but watch Christmas movies and knitting. A lovely night!

Have fun!

Blogmas Day 3 and Weekend Wrap Up

Today’s question from the amazing Abbey is whether I would want to give up Christmas cookies or hot chocolate?

I know this probably won’t be a popular answer, but I don’t like chocolate so never drink hot chocolate anyways. I wouldn’t miss it! I love the idea of hot chocolate as this special holiday drink, but I wouldn’t get past the first sip. Bring on the Christmas cookies!!!

Weekend:

My weekend started with having to go tell my upstairs neighbor to stop vacuuming at midnight on Friday night. I put up with him being noisy all the time, but I had hit my last nerve when he woke me out of a sound sleep.

Both Saturday and Sunday were quite quiet days. I did a Hallmark workout each day after watching a Hallmark movie.

I ran this morning out on the dykes with Dennis, though we cut it in half because the wind was so bad. 30km/hr winds was just too much for me and I never got a tailwind, just headwinds no matter where I turned:(

I escaped to the knitting store yesterday afternoon after deciding I would do a toque for my sister in law and a scarf for my brother for having me to Christmas dinner.

I have the toque knit up but it seems huge to me. I will have a tall lady with lots of hair try it on at work to see if it’s just huge to me. I am loving the looks of my brother’s scarf and it’s so soft because it has alpaca in it!

Well I’m going back to my book.

Have fun!

The 2nd Day of Blogmas

Today the question is:

Would you rather be an elf in Santa’s workshop or a reindeer on Santa’s sleigh?

Well as much as it would be so cool to travel the world, I am always cold so I would definitely say I would rather be an elf. Besides, elves get to make toys that bring so much joy and they get to be jolly all the time. I’ve also heard that there might be lots of treats in their lives!

My life:

I taught- the kids are getting crazier by the day. I ran 5.1km with Sarah and then I watched a Christmas movie and picked up stitches for the front of my sweater.

Have fun!

Hallmark Workout

So I was asked today about my Hallmark workout so I will share today’s version at the end.

Teaching:

Lol I actually had to have my kids put their heads down on their desk and think of someway they could make our classroom awesome this afternoon. The twenty five and six year olds just can’t contain their Christmas excitement anymore! We have Elf on the Shelf excitement and escapades and advent calendars. I’m guessing some of these sweet treats are getting eaten before school🙄😳

Today we got to 275 items for the food bank donation. Whatever else they are, these families are generous!

We tackled chalkboard spelling and actually made it to whole words!! I’m so excited!

We also did another patterning sheet that went really well. The kids were all done in twenty minutes and with no mistakes!

We had gym today where we had Christmas themed relay races. We galloped like reindeer, did the Santa shuffle, and skipped like elves.

This afternoon we tackled patterned paper chains, but I messed up. We will try them again if we have time. I may just cut the strips myself and have it as an early finishers activity.

After school I had the fun of handing in my report cards. Let’s hope there are no corrections!

Family:

I came home quite quickly as I had promised that I would take Gus for ice cream today. He had tons of options, but there weren’t many for me so I had eggnog again. It was great to see my brother and nephew again as it seems like forever and probably was Thanksgiving. The great news is that my sister in law says they are staying home for Christmas dinner and I can join them. Thankfully this isn’t against the rules as I’m single. Single people are allowed to choose a “family” to join. I was told I have to bring ice cream though.

Exercise:

I spent a lot of the evening trying to create a calendar for my mom on Costco, but it just keeps saying all my photos aren’t high enough resolution. Sorry mom, I did try!

Ok I was asked about my hallmark workouts. I will say there are tons of these on google and I change mine up all the time as I get bored. Sometimes they are all cardio moves, or input a cardio move in between weight moves for a minute, other times I assign two exercises to each movie feature to make the workout longer. For example one thing might be both squats and plié squats. I usually assign five repetitions to each instance of the element. For example, one Christmas tree sighting might be worth five squats. I also have to admit I do a lot more movie elements than I see on the ones on Google. I also pay very close attention and get more instances as I want a harder/longer workout. Lots of these could be eliminated or combined.

Ok after all that, here’s what I did tonight.

I watched the movie Christmas Unleashed, which I have to admit is not my favorite, but it did the trick.

The elements I looked for:

Baking/cooking/cookies-3

Bright jacket- none seen

Snow falling/ sledding/ snowball fight-1

Hot drinks-4

Christmas tree or tree farm-8

Family tradition-1

Skating-none

Hugs/ kisses -7

Merry Christmas-12

Santa-1

Town Event-1

Ugly sweater-2

Caroling-none

Festive name-none

Presents/ present wrapping/ unwrapping-1

Decorating/ decorations-5

Mention of holiday spirit-1

Sleigh/carriage-3

Awkward moment-4

Mention of a miracle-3

A fireplace/ fire pit-2

Advice from older relative-5

Flashback-5

Some elements are added or deleted, depending on the movie. Flashbacks were added for this movie.

What I ended up doing:

15 front raises

Plank ( I took all the single instances and did a plank to the next minute so I ended up doing a 30 sec, 45 sec, 5 sec, 50 sec, 15 sec, 35 sec planks)

20 tricep extensions

40 squats

35 plié squats

60 crunches

10 mountain climbers per side

25 bicycle crunches

15 bent over rows

20 bicep curls

25 deadlifts

15 lateral raises

25 hip raises

10 sit ups

25 reverse crunches

I know I make this way more difficult than it needs to be.

If you want something simple I would recommend 10 jumping jacks every time someone says Merry Christmas, 5 squats every time there is a tree sighting, and 5 push-ups every time there is a hug or kiss. You’d probably get a good starting workout that way.

Well now you all know my horrible secret- I complicate everything!

Have fun!

Trivia Tuesday

Today wasn’t a great day as I was still upset about Christmas and my kids were wired!

Teaching:

My class has brought in 241 items for the food bank so that’s pretty amazing for twenty little kids.

We tackled the letter u and it’s short sound today. We managed to get through Around the World counting by 5s. The kids had music while I tried to get more editing of my report cards done.

This afternoon I got through a reading group and then we tackled reindeer. Reindeer is our theme this week. We learned reindeer facts.

Did you know:

Reindeer live for fifteen years in the wild and twenty in captivity.

Reindeer can swim.

Reindeer are called caribou in Canada.

Male and female reindeer grow horns. Male reindeer can be 1.4m wide!

We then pretended we had a pet reindeer. The ideas were great, but it was just too much writing for the little guys.

Exercise:

I got out for a run after school as I was hoping that would change my mood. I got 5.22km in the rain.

Trivia:

Thankfully my one social event of the week was still on which was great!

In the first round we knew:

Name three US states that start with W?

Washington, Wyoming, and Wisconsin

What was the name of the wife in Home Improvement?

Jill Taylor

Who were the two male actors in Wedding Crashers?

VinceVaughn, Owen Wilson

What does GMO stand for?

Genetically modified organism

We had to figure out how big an angle was- 62 degrees.

What is the capital of PEI?

Charlottetown

The music round was tough! The categories were sun songs, rain songs, oh no you didn’t which was the techno version of songs, songs by Lil’, and 2013 songs.

Of course tonight was the night we were trying to stay ahead of another team🙄

In Kahoot, we knew:

How many players are on the floor at one time in box lacrosse?

Six

What is on the dime?

Bluenose schooner

What nationality was Casanova?

Italian

Who was a famous gangster?

Al Capone

In the final round:

What was the famous line Arnold said in Different Strokes?

What you talking about?

What was the last name in The Godfather?

Correleone

What was the dog’s name in TinTin?

Snowy

Some nights we know everything and some nights we know nothing🤣

Have fun!

12 Days if Blogmas

I am completely depressed this evening as it looks as though I’ll be spending Christmas alone, so I’ll get started on the fun of Blogmas. This is the brainchild of Abbey of Three Cats and a Girl. This year it is done as a Would you Rather.

The first question is:

Would you rather give up Christmas trees or Christmas cookies?

I have to admit that I haven’t had a real tree in a very long time since my building doesn’t allow real trees, however, I think I would still take trees over cookies. Christmas trees just seem so cheerful and uplifting. I love cookies, but I can’t eat most and the rest I just have to run off, so it’s trees for the win for me:)

Have fun!

Weekend Wrap Up

It has been a weekend of spoiling thanks to my friends at work.

Saturday:

My friend said that for my birthday I could choose a run anywhere and she would come with me. I chose Kanaka Creek. I was there a while ago with another friend, but we didn’t have time to walk the entire dyke and I was hopeful that it would be a nice, long run. It was a gorgeous sunny day and we set out, only to find out the dyke only goes 880 meters🙄. We ended up doing the dyke as part of a loop around the park and did this loop three times for a total of forty minutes for forty years. It was a fast run for me, but so fun to have a friend with me. We chatted the whole way which made the time go really fast.

We then adjourned to a local cafe called The Big Feast and had brunch. This was part of the birthday present as it is my favorite meal to go out for. I had my first mimosa and a pulled pork hash. It was all extremely yummy!

I came home for a quick nap and then we met up again to have a pedicure. My friends got to see exactly how bad i am at having pedicures! My feet are extremely sensitive, but I do have very pretty red toes for Christmas now. We also walked over to a new distillery that has opened locally. I had been wanting to check it out. I am not a big drinker, but like to visit everywhere once so I can talk about it if it comes up in conversation. The kindergarten teacher from my school was there too so it was nice to see her. We also stopped on the way home and shared nachos, chicken wings and dry ribs.

My friend Lyndsay definitely made my big day as wonderful as she could in light of the restrictions we are under. It was an awesome day!

I ended it with a chat with my brother on the island and his family.

Sunday:

It was a good thing I woke up naturally as my new phone doesn’t seem to have my run alarm on it yet.

It was just Dennis and I running this morning. I had unfortunately dressed for cold, instead of the drizzle we got. I really hate running with rain on my nose! We got ten kilometers in and at a decent pace so I’d call it a success.

I checked out the dollar store on the way home and found notebooks and pencils for my students’ Christmas gifts. We wanted to do gingerbread men decorating with them, but we aren’t allowed to, so had to come up with a different gift.

I once again had another nap and then spent the rest of the day knitting on my test knit sweater and reading a book.

It really was a lovely day! I even got some yoga done and an Epsom salts bath.

Well, I’m going back to my book and it seems as though life hasn’t magically changed now that I’m forty 🤪🤣

Have fun!

SAL Update

For the past twelve plus years, this cross stitch project sat on a shelf in my spare room. This year I was determined to make progress and this SAL is definitely helping!

Here is where I was three weeks ago:.

Here is where I am now:

I haven’t made much progress this time as it has been exceptionally gray here. I am having a tough time working on this project when it isn’t nice and bright out. I really need to find a good light! If anyone has a good suggestion, I would love to hear any suggestions of good lamps!

Make sure you check out everyone else’s progress as there are some amazing projects in this SAL!
