Run to Rapid City Update #7

I am so sorry this is late. I think I’ve avoided it because I’m mad at myself for how little running I did in September. Between a crazy return to work and an injury, my mileage is the lowest it has been all year:(

At the start of the year I was having a tough time getting out the door for runs as I had no goal. I had already done a speed goal and a distance goal and now I didn’t know what to do. Then the awesome Kathy suggested I run to visit her in South Dakota. Well there I went.

Last month I had just made it to the outskirts of Alberton, Montana, 933 kilometers from home.

This month I have made it to a tiny lake just before the Rock Creek Airport in Clinton, Montana.

This area was named for General Sit Henry Clinton and boasts just over 1,000 people at this time. I don’t know why this map route only takes me through small towns. A runner would be way less noticeable in a bigger city, but I suppose the air quality is better out here.

I can see that there is a quite modern looking building at the airport and it has a patio! I have just five more kilometers to run and then hopefully I can stop there and have a cold drink!

In 2017, this area had a small plane crash which killed two people. The plane appears to have been trying to land, but crashed into trees beside I90 due to engine failure . I really hope I am not standing anywhere near where that happened!

Well, I had better keep going as I would like to make it much further this month than I did last!

Have fun! AJ

Run to Rapid City Update #6

Wow I’ve been doing this for six months now!

At the start of the year I was having a tough time getting out the door for runs as I had no goal. I had already done a speed goal and a distance goal and now I didn’t know what to do. Then the awesome Kathy suggested I run to visit her in South Dakota. Well there I went.

Last month I had just made it to the border between Idaho and Montana and this month I am at 933 km from home and am standing on Rosco Road, on the outskirts of Alberton, Montana which I have just passed through.

Alberton, Montana has a population of 435 people and the post office there has been around since 1909. This is a small town in Mineral County, Montana. It is at an elevation of 3,054 feet and is named for the president of a railway company- Albert J. Earling.

I loved seeing the historic elementary school building as I came through town.

I wish my school looked liked this, though I like that my school has more greenery around it. The other cool thing about this building is that it is only 50 feet from the high school and the two are connected by tunnel. Fun!

I, unfortunately, missed the big celebratory day of Alberton’s Railroad Day on the third Saturday in July. Oh well, I was a month late, but it could have been cool to see a small town parade and petting zoo.

While Alberton is named for a Railway president, the railway has also made Alberton infamous as the site of the largest train chemical spill in US history. In 1996, a train derailed near here and 350 people suffered chlorine inhalation:(

Well, I had better keep going as I would like to make it to the next town soon!

Have fun!

Run To Rapid City Update #5

I am kicking myself!!

Exercise:

I got a good weights workout in this morning and a bit of yoga this afternoon.

Reading:

I have finished the entire Sex, Love and Stiletto series by Lauren Layne and have enjoyed them all, so much so that I am starting on the spinoff series called Oxford. I think I like most the strong friend circle that is continuous through all the books.

Run to Rapid City:

At the start of the year I was having a very difficult time getting my butt out the door to run and I wasn’t quite sure how to solve the problem. I had done a speed goal and I had done a mileage goal, so what was there to do now. Then the wonderful Kathy suggested I run to her house for a visit. This inspired me and continues to get me out the door.

At my last check in I was almost all the way across Washington State, but boy is that state ever wide! This month I have ran 126.36km to make it to 800km overall for the year.

I have just past the city of Mullan, Idaho and am 10km from the border between Idaho and Montana. I am, of course, kicking myself for not running 10 more kilometers this month. It also seems so odd that after six months to make it across Washington, I did Idaho in a month.

The city of Mullan Idaho is in a silver mining area which is still active, and has a population of about 600 people (at the last census). I am definitely finding it more difficult to run here as it is at 3200 feet above sea level and at home I am at sea level. Definitely noticing that!

The city was created between two silver mines and was incorporated in 1904 and named after the Westpoint Graduate, John Mullan who was tasked with finding a road route between the fort in Montana and the fort in Washington.

I have ran by a John Mullan elementary school and a secondary school, along with an Olympic sized swimming pool!

The Morning Club building is the most interesting building I have seen in town. It was built in 1921.

Sorry, I can’t help my love of old buildings! This building now has the bowling alley and the library in it. I really hope they don’t operate at the same time!

Well, that’s as far as I’ve gotten and I need to get going on that last ten kilometers so I can start making my way across Montana. I have the feeling that state is going to take much longer!

Have fun!

Run To Rapid City Update #4

Exercise Update for the Month:

I ran a total of 21 times in June for a total of 107.23km. I am slightly disappointed in this total, but as my mom reminded me, June was quite the month for me at work, so I guess I should be happy I got the 107km in. I also worked out on 17 days, and rode my bike once. Hopefully everything will increase during the summer!

Running:

So at the start of the year I was having a very difficult time motivating myself to get out the door for runs as I had no goal. I had done a pace goal two years ago and had done a mileage goal last year and just really didn’t know what to do this year. That’s when the amazing and wonderful Kathy of Sewing, etc on WordPress offered an awesome suggestion. She suggested that I virtually run to visit her. Now Kathy always offers so many interesting suggestions and I would dearly love to see her garden, bunnies and all her sewing and knitting projects, so this seemed a great idea. I immediately set off for Rapid City.

So far I have ran 674km and am in the Spokane Valley. This is the largest suburb of Spokane. It is a larger city of 99,000 people.

This is one of their tourism pictures. Unfortunately it’s not that colourful right now.

I am 17 kilometers from the Idaho state line and can’t stop wait to start working on a new state.

A Return & Run To Rapid City Update #3

It was back to working with children inside the classroom today.

Teaching:

I started the day with four children. It was a lot of handwashing and reminding kids to keep apart. I wish there had been some sort of announcement from our admin, but there was nothing except telling us to go get our kids after lunch (like I wasn’t going to🙄). I ended the day with two kids. The best part of the day was how excited they were to design their islands. I am thinking that each week they will get a chance to design something different. I think next week they may all be in castles.

I just really don’t like this feeling of anger that I have continuously when I think of work right now!

Exercise:

I was freezing cold all day so I definitely over dressed for my run. I ran around Bert Flynn with my friend Sarah. I have become much more accepting of the slow pace now that I think about the fact that going slow today will hopefully allow me to go faster tomorrow with Dennis!

I had a lot of fun flying down the hill to home afterwards. I wasn’t as fast as last week, but it definitely brought my average pace down for the run.

I should be doing a workout tonight as my runs and workouts aren’t even right now, but I don’t think it’s going to happen.

May Running:

I ran a total of 21 times in May for a total of 152. 79km. I think that is the most running distance I have ever done in a month. I know last year I found it difficult to get to 100km per month, but this year I seem to be having no trouble surpassing that. I also worked out on 20 days, did 4 yoga sessions and rode my bike 5 times for a total of 34km. Hopefully the bike riding mileage will improve greatly.

So at the start of the year I was having a very difficult time motivating myself to get out the door for runs as I had no goal. I had done a pace goal two years ago and had done a mileage goal last year and just really didn’t know what to do this year. That’s when the amazing and wonderful Kathy of Sewing, etc on WordPress (Sorry Kathy I don’t know how to do a link on this new wordpress program yet) offered an awesome suggestion. She suggested that I virtually run to visit her. Now Kathy always offers so many interesting suggestions and I would dearly love to see her garden, bunnies and all her sewing and knitting projects, so this seemed a great idea. I immediately set off for Rapid City.

So far I have ran 566km and have just passed through the town of Ritzville, Washington. Ritzville is a small town in Adams County and boasts just 1,679 residents as of the last census. The town is named after Phillip Ritz who settled in the area in 1878. In the beginning it was a major wheat shipping hub and became the biggest wheat hub in the world in 1901The town burned in 1888, but was quickly rebuilt. The town has not grown much since the 1960s when the new interstate took traffic away from the downtown. The small town remains 85km southeast of Spokane.

I of course, being a history major and a history nerd had to see the Nelson H Greene house at 502 South Adams Street. This house was built in 1902 by the town’s first mayor. It is a Queen Anne Revival style and is part of the National Register of Historic Places.

I am now 5km past Ritzville and going strong towards Spokane!

Well, that’s it for me tonight.

Have fun!

Run to Rapid City Update #2

At the start of this year I was having a difficult time getting myself out the door for runs. I just didn’t know what kind of goal I wanted this year and without a goal, I wasn’t getting the miles in.

Well then an awesome woman named Kathy helped me out. She gave me a goal. I am running from my house in British Columbia to her house in South Dakota. It is a very long way!! It may actually take me years to get there, but it does the trick and gets me out the door:)

At the start of April I was in the Olallie State Park in Washington.

My goal was to make it to Ellenaburg, but I actually made it past there and Kittitas. I am now where Park Creek crosses the I90.

Unfortunately there is nothing here- not even a lake, so there’s no place to stop:(. I may be tempted to dip my feet into this creek as it’s quite the creek!

I really didn’t realize that it would take me so many months to just get through Washington State, but it will be okay as long as Kathy doesn’t move!🤣

Until next month!

At the start of March I was in Arlington, Washington and I have now made my way to Olallie State Park.

This Park is day use only and know for its waterfalls and rock climbing. It has lots of hiking trails and thankfully some are short as I just want to rest my feet!
