She’s Back

My co teacher is back after having been off sick for two weeks and boy was it ever nice!!!

Knitting:

I started the day getting three rows done on the afghan pattern and managed to finish that one up later this evening. I am on my second to last call of yarn, so we’ll see if I’m going to have enough or have to go buy more. It seems unbelievable that I am so close to being done this big project too:)

I’m starting to daydream about what I will make next.

Teaching:

The day went pretty well! We finished our seasons mini book and the children all practiced reading it. I changed math to a 100 chart picture of a turkey. It was very interesting to see who knew the numbers well and who didn’t and got frustrated.

This afternoon I was the one frustrated as we tried to cram too large a project in the afternoon space. It got done and turned out well, but I just felt that I was always after the children to hurry and worried about running out of time. That’s what I’m trying to avoid this year!

The directed drawing turkeys did turn out super cute, even though I did the steps in the wrong order. And yes I did say this was one time they didn’t have to colour realistically:)

Baking:

I got home to beautiful sunshine and just felt like baking. I have a super easy granola bar recipe that turns out great no matter what you put in it, so I whipped up some of those:)

The recipe comes from Lunch Box: Creative Recipes for Everyday Lunches which I have had forever.

2 eggs

1 cup brown sugar ( I use less)

1 tbsp canola oil

1 tbsp flour ( I used millet)

1 tsp cinnamon

1/4 tsp salt

1.5 cups oats

1/3 cup raisins

1/3 cup dried fruit

1/4 cup chocolate chips

1/4 cup chopped nuts or seeds

This time I used oats, raisins, craisins, dried blueberries and chopped pecans. I have done all different mix-ins though and it’s always turned out great!

Exercise:

This evening I went back to athletic yoga with my friend Corianne. It was still a great workout, but I did like that there seemed to be a bit more stretching in it this time:)

Well I’m off to sleep so I can survive Friday tomorrow:)

Have fun!

They’re Home

It was a pretty great day right from the start to the end:)

Teaching:

My day started with being busy getting the special helper calendar and printing books ready for both grade 1/2 classes. My co teacher is home ill and she was worrying about these two things so I got them done so she could quit thinking of them and start getting better!

When I went to pick up the children at the door, one of my grade one boys gave me these:)

It was such a lovely start to my day!!!

We wrote out Fall bucket lists today. I have to say thank you to Mildlygranola as her Fall passport post was a great example for my students. I’ll have to take some photos to share with you as they came up with some good ideas:)

This one is mine:)

This afternoon we wrote out what we see, hear, smell, taste and touch in the Fall. All but one group did really well. The fifth group was too busy poking each other to get anything done!🙄😖

As we were heading out the door to play this afternoon we saw the principal showing a student and parent around. This usually means we are getting a new student. One of my little boys turns to me and says, ” don’t worry Miss B, they aren’t our problem cause our class is full.” 🤣🤪🤣🤪

We did get a new fridge today, but we were all super disappointed that it didn’t come in a box:(

Eating:

I’ve had a berry kale shake, a hard boiled egg, southwest chicken salad, larabar and seafood marinara today to eat. Can you tell I am a creature of habit when it comes to food? Actually I just get full so quickly that one dish lasts me all week!

Family:

I heard the best noise at 11:15am, my mom’s text alert- they had landed at home! I was super happy they were home and arranged to meet them for dinner. I did end up picking them up and we headed to a local pasta house- Pasta Polo. I like this restaurant because it is nice and quiet. You can actually have a conversation with people!!!! It also has a good selection of food without having a novel for a menu. There are starters, salads, pizza, pasta and dessert. Thankfully they also offer gluten free pasta and pizza base so I have some choice:). I forgot to take a picture of my seafood marinara

But here it is from a different trip to this restaurant in March. Talk about creature of habit! I should really try something new!

Actually I did try one new thing tonight- a lavender lemon drop martini. Not really my thing, but neat to try:)

Knitting:

I am yet again back to my quest to use up stash yarn. I have started a bowl of my own creation. We’ll see how it goes. I wish I could stay up knitting, but I should go to bed so I’m patient again tomorrow. See how long I can keep this “good day” streak up?

Have fun!

Just Another Day

There wasn’t anything super exciting today.

Teaching:

Our morning was long because I had to review all the classroom jobs and the children got to choose their jobs for the first time this week. I swear some of them have already forgotten to do them🤣

I got through labeling two more sets of books during my prep. I really appreciate the parents who just send the supplies and don’t put the child’s name on everything! I spend more time having to redo labeling than it would take to just do it in the first place!

This afternoon we started working on our bubble letter names. I sure hope we finish before Thursday’s open house!

The most exciting part of my day was probably coming home for lunch as I got to have tuna on carrot crackers:)

Product:

Several years ago my parents brought me home These Okanagan Rawsome Carrot Crisps. I absolutely love these crisps as they are so yummy! They have some spice to them, they are hearty enough to stand up to being dipped and they seem to go with everything! Definitely worth buying if you get the chance. I may just have to do some online ordering:)

Errands:

I had a massage after school and then headed out for some teacher errands. I had a lot of things on my list but just got to Costco for playdough and the student pictures I took. I also dropped the stuff from the staffroom off at the donation centre. I miss having my mom for company on my errand circle. I ended up coming home when my stomach started growling.

Knitting:

I spent last night knitting a purple winter headband only to pull it out because I didn’t have enough yarn. Tonight I have pulled a new version out three times because it seemed too wide to me. I think I’m finally happy with it and just need to finish it off. Hopefully it will be long enough for a kid, perhaps my niece:)

Well, that’s it from me:)

Have fun!

Rain, Rain, Go Away, Come Again Another Day

I like a rainy day when I have nothing to do, but today wasn’t that day.

Exercise:

I had planned to sleep in this morning, but I only made it an extra half hour. It was raining out so I really didn’t want to crawl out of bed for my run, but thankfully I had arranged to meet Brenda, so I had to.

All the way to Burnaby Lake I kept telling myself I just had to do at least five kilometers, I didn’t have to do the whole ten. I decided though that I had to run for a half hour straight as I worry about losing my half hour base.

By the time I got to a half hour, I figured I might as well keep going, but if the path got really wet and soggy I would turn around. It didn’t, so I ended up running the whole lake and I actually had a great run:) I took a thirty second walk break at 30 minutes and a forty-five second break at forty minutes, but that was it. That’s the first time I’ve ever run 10.11km with only two very short breaks and I actually still had the energy to pick it up a bit at the end. Of course, it poured rain the whole time I was out there!!!

I was super happy with myself as I had to run past the parking lot to meet Brenda (she usually meets me before I get to the parking lot), but then she said she had gone further before turning 🤪Ok I’m not super Runner yet 😜

I had a 6:54/km average and I’ve already ran further than I did in all of last year!

House:

After tea, I came home and got laundry in and the bathroom cleaned. The two things I had to accomplish today before I would let myself knit.

Knitting:

I finally finished one pattern of the purple poncho I am working on. I need to get going on this faster!! Hopefully some tomorrow!

Baking:

I had Bookclub tonight so I had to cook or bake something g today. We read The Little Paros Bookshop so it was obviously a French theme. I made cherry clafoutis. I got the recipe from GlutenFree on a Shoestring. It was super easy and tasted great! Even better I already had all of the ingredients:)

Bookclub:

This month we read The Little Paris Bookshop by Nina George. As a Bookclub we were evenly divided on the book. I didn’t mind the book and it kept me entertained, but it definitely wouldn’t be the first book I’d recommend to people. I found the pace was a little slow for my liking and I wasn’t all that interested in parts of it.

For me the main focus was on the friendship between the three male characters and how they grew. I could almost live without the whole Manon storyline.

I did find one quote I liked.

His father would have presumably signed up without hesitation for the three things that made you really ‘happy’ according to Cuneo’s worldview.

One: eat well. No junk food, because it only makes you unhappy, lazy and fat.

Two: sleep through the night (thanks to more exercise, less alcohol and positive thoughts).

Three: spend time with people who are friendly and seek to understand you in their own particular way.

Book club was of course, as wonderful as ever! I love being part of a Bookclub because it gets me to read books I perhaps wouldn’t on my own, it gets me to try cooking new cuisines, and it gets me out of the house!

The food and the cute babies help too:)

Well I’m off to bed as my eyes keep wanting to shut!

Have fun!

AJ

Fun and Errands

My day wasn’t super productive but at least there was some fun!

Exercise:

I got myself all confused this morning as my run was a half hour later than normal. It was worth it though as two sets of my running buddies came back to join us this morning. It was awesome to run with three other people, even though I fell three quarters around the park!

My run was about 33 minutes and covered 4.7km with an average of 7:08. We were actually running way faster than that, but had to stop st each intersection to wait for one guy to ensure he didn’t get lost. This timing doesn’t bother me at all because today was about friends, not about time!

I did get out for a walk after I got home to finish up my squad runner mission because I couldn’t stand being in 12th place.

Eating:

After our run we headed to the Coquitlam Grill for brunch. Going to a new place for brunch was on my list , but this place is so quick and good and cheap that it’s our usual:). I had the same breakfast as usual- the sunrise jumpstart with two eggs and hash browns, but I switched out the toast for fruit salad. I figured it was the healthier choice as when I have toast I want ham on it!!

Shopping:

I grabbed my mom and we hit the mall for the last few things she needs for her trip. It wasn’t the most productive trip, but I think we managed to get it all. The mall was crazy busy today!

We also stopped at the drugstore, the hardware store for lightbulbs (I could do surgery in my bedroom now🤣) and Michaels for a gift card for my cousin.

I dropped my mom off and then went and finally got a car wash and some gas.

Crafting:

I finished a square today and have started in my last square. It’s hard to believe that I’m so close to being done this huge project!

On another crafting note, my friend liked her scarf and loved how soft it was😀

Well there’s my day:)

Have fun!

Not As Bad As I Thought

Today was full of things that were better than I thought they’d be.

I had to start the day by finally getting on the scale and finding out how much my month of holidaying cost me. I was quite happy it was only five pounds and hopefully they’ll be gone soon! You may see more pictures of what I’m eating so that I stay on track and feel free to “yell at me” if I’m not exercising consistently.

Exercise:

I dropped off my library books and started my run from the opposite side as I usually do. I hadn’t gone far when I knew it wasn’t going to be a great run. I actually turned around at one point and then thought, no I’d better get it done first thing. It ended up being a combination of walking and running. I suppose I had it coming as I have been eating unhealthy food and and can tell you I haven’t been drinking enough water. I guess it all caught up to me.

On my run, I was thinking about upcoming workouts. Last year I started the school year running before school at 6am, but it really only worked until it got too dark so I am thinking that I am going to stick with after school runs. I think it might serve as a good way to clear my head as well as get some exercise.

This evening, I wanted to do something to continue to get back to being healthy but I’m still slightly sore from last night’s workout so I decided to do an ab workout as it is the first day my stomach isn’t sore. I did: 10 weighted sit ups, 20 crunches, 30 twisted mountain climbers, 40 static crunch with scissor legs, 50 reverse curls, 60 toe reaches, 70 weighted Russian twists, 80 bicycles, 90 leg drops, 100 dead bugs.

At this point I am thinking that I will alternate an ab workout with a regular workout. We’ll see how that goes.

I guess it was my day to make active decisions🤣

Shopping:

I had made plans to meet up with my friend Brenda to go to Gourmet Warehouse. Neither of us are allowed in this store without supervision so we go together a couple of times a year. It was fun to poke through for a couple of hours and there were lots of things I wanted, but I just came home with this:

Eating:

Another part of the fun of Gourmet Warehouse is that there is a fabulous restaurant nearby. It is called Scandilicious. It is horrible to find parking around there, but is definitely worth the search! The other two times I’ve been to Scandilicious I’ve had the Veganessa which is a gluten free and dairy free waffle with peanut butter, jam and berries. This time, the girl at the counter said that three other dishes could be made gf/df. I was a little nervous after my recent dairy problem, but went for it and had the Westcoast with lemon dill sauce rather than hollandaise.

It was amazing!!!!!!! Waffle with smoked salmon, capers, lemon dill sauce and two eggs! Oh I could eat that for every meal!! Their chai latte with almond milk was really good too!

Brenda had the ABBA which she was raving about as well. It is Brie, bacon, apple and avocado on a waffle with balsamic drizzled on top.

On the way home I saw the Chomp Eatery I have been wanting to try but don’t know if I can give up going to Scandilicious to try Chomp🤣

Knitting:

I haven’t knitted yet today, though it is on the agenda for after I get this post done, but I wanted to finally show you the scarf I made last week.

It is more purple than it shows in the picture, but I like how it is reversible as the pattern is the same on both sides. It knit up fast and will now go in my basket to be gifted or donated as it is not long enough for my friend Kari. It is the speed bumps pattern on ravelry and just made with red heart yarn I had in my stash.

Reading:

Instead of the knitting I was supposed to be doing, I sat on my deck reading all afternoon. I finished my last library book, and I’m not allowed anymore until I get caught up on ARCs and the loaned books.

I really enjoyed Moonlight Over Manhattan as it’s the newest in the series. I liked how it brought two different Sarah Morgan series together so I got a little update on the characters from the O’Neil series. The characters were interesting and I especially liked the main woman as there were lots of things I could relate to. I also liked that the book was about self-growth a lot and yet it was laugh out loud funny in parts. A great summer read!

Blogging:

So I caught up on my blog reading today and realized you all are who I should ask. The other night, WordPress told me photos couldn’t be uploaded as I had used all of my 3G. I deleted a few pictures that were duplicated which has solved the problem for the moment, but I am wondering how other people have dealt with this problem?

Well I’m off to knit!

Have fun!

AJ

Back to Routine

I am almost back to routine.

Exercise:

I dragged myself out of bed for my Sunday morning run. I don’t know why I was so tired, but I really was. I gave myself permission to run even slower than normal, but I had to go as I was meeting people.

I ended up doing 6.5km along the river. I was super slow and it decided to pour rain the whole time we were out there, but oh well, I’d better get used to it again and we definitely need the rain!

My running buddies were awesome as I was 600m short of my distance when we got back to the car and they carried on with me:)

This evening I decided there was no time like the present to get back to routine so I found a workout to do and did it. I often screenshot workouts and then don’t know where I got them. So I apologize to whoever created this great workout. If it was you, please let me know so I can give you credit!!!

20 Around the world lunges

12 stability ball hamstring curls

12 SL Bridges

12 sumo squat calf raises

12 SL deadlifts

12 deadlifts

10 curtsy lunges

10 medicine ball jump squats

10 knee tucks

10 pikes

10 side plank knee tucks

10 banded fire hydrants

10 banded aide leg raises

10 clams

10 plank leg lifts

I love the fact that I was sweaty by the time I got to the end. It felt good to be moving again!

Reading:

I finished another Susan Mallery library book (it’s due back tomorrow!) called Second Chance Girl. It is part of the Happily Inc series and was quite enjoyable. I think Matthias is my favourite brother so far in this series as he’s more upbeat and personable. I liked that the book featured both of the Lund sisters, but I truly think they both could have had their own books as it felt quite surface for both relationships.

I of course have started another book already which I am really enjoying!

Knitting:

Around my long nap, I have also done some knitting today. I had knit a scarf for my friend while I was away, but it was too short, so I picked up more yarn and have started a new one! The yarn I picked is Loops and Threads Charisma Heather. This friend is not a knitter so I wanted something that wasn’t delicate. I have a week to get it done, and thankfully finally made some progress today while watching some old Hallmark movies.

Cooking:

I spent some more time in the kitchen today. I was amazed to learn that all of my running buddies, past and present have a lovely brunch once they get home from our run on Sunday morning! Why have I never done this??? Today I did. I love breakfast hash and so made up my own. I heated cubed sweet potato, added celery, garlic, purple pepper and onion, then chorizo sausage, mushrooms and spinach. I topped it with some mozzarella cheese and an egg. It was so good I could eat it everyday!

My egg wasn’t pretty so you get a picture pre-egg.

I also tried another recipe from my Ella Woodward cookbook

Today I tried the carrot muffins. They are edible, but I find them too heavy and dense for my taste. I’ve done a lot of gf/df baking and there is better baking out there! I will try a few of the other recipes before I decide whether to keep the book.

Well I’m back to my book, knitting and movie:)

Have fun!

Wandering

Today I learned that I am not a particularly friendly morning person. I need a few minutes of quiet to get my brain going.

Exercise:

We headed out first thing this morning for a hike that my friend’s sister recommended. She would be a great Airbnb hostess! We parked at the end of a road with the expectation that we would walk in to see a waterfall. I texted my mom the details and then realized that it was going to be less than 5km round trip! Obviously my definition of exercise is different🤣. It was a lovely walk.

I have to admit we were a little underwhelmed by the falls.

It turns out we didn’t see the “real” Falls. 🤣. Oh well, it was still a nice walk.

Eating:

We headed into Sechelt after this to a bakery. It was super cute and had a good menu, but the wait to order was about fifteen minutes and then we had a forty-five minute wait for our food. Good thing it was good, though there was a hair in mine:(

I also had a treat from the Cheeky Monkey bakery.

This was just a few doors down from the bakery. It’s a very small space and I have to admit I am a little confused about exactly how many stores are in the space as there was also Seafoam smoothies and talk of salads. I ended up choosing the chocolate caramel shortbread bar. Only their bars were gluten free and dairy free and they all had chocolate in them.

This was not as sweet as I like as the chocolate was dark chocolate. My friends both chose the earl grey cupcake and said it had a good earl grey taste but the texture of a muffin more than a cupcake.

Reading:

I finally finished another book for NetGalley.

One More Moment is the story of Charlotte Clark, an overworked social worker and Julian Grayson, the drummer for the band Shaughnessy.

I loved lots of things about this book. There are laugh-out-loud moments, especially the first meeting of these characters.

I loved the band members and how they stood by each other and provided a support network.

I loved how it highlighted charities and simple ways everyone could volunteer and help out.

I loved the pacing of the book as it doesn’t lag or rush. There is a whiff of insta-love but it’s not overpowering. I liked how the characters dealt with this.

I loved how realistic the characters were. They had their problems and had to work through them in their own way. They stayed true to their characters, even the parts of their personalities that drive me crazy!

I would recommend this book for anyone who has enjoyed Samantha Chase in the past or the Shaughnessy family series as they make an appearance. Anyone who likes music romances or those that start with a hilarious misunderstanding would enjoy this one.

Thank you to NetGalley, Samantha Chase and the publisher for the free copy in exchange for the honest review.

knitting:

I spent some time this afternoon working on a scarf for a friend. She requested a long, purple scarf. I had started an entrelac scarf, but didn’t like how it had a good side and a bad side. It seemed like you’d be forever adjusting to try and hide the “bad” side. I found a new pattern “Speed bumps” on Ravelry and have just finished the first pattern repeat. So far so good!

Movie:

This evening we are watching Like Father, a Netflix original movie. So far, I have to admit it’s slow, but maybe it will pick up:)

Edit: the movie got way better with some very cute scenes!

Well I’ll leave you now.

Have fun!

On the Road Again

I was up with the sun this morning to get things done! A friend of mine has a sister with a cabin on the beach. No one was using it this weekend so we get to enjoy it:)

Transport:

I had to head downtown to meet up M and E. It was going well until a guy stumbled and grabbed my left arm hard. I was in absolute agony as that’s the arm with the pulled ligament. Thank goodness my friend had Advil! The trip over was easy otherwise, though we were really happy to have a ferry reservation as the sailing was full!

Eating:

Today was a lot of eating! We are in the ferry and thankfully they had an Asian salmon salad I could eat. It was quite yummy but they should have used mandarin oranges rather than navel ones!

We stopped at the grocery store and picked up essentials, like rice chips and cookies 🤣😜

Dinner was awesome as we did homemade pizza.

I will definitely be doing these at home too!

Scenery:

Other than making dinner we hung out on the deck, hung out on the sand and walked the beach. Here are some shots to show you the lovely scenery!

Have fun:)

An Out Day

It was a nice combination day with some lazing and some outside activity.

I spent the morning just hanging out with my mom and reading blogs.

Eating:

My dad got to choose the restaurant and we ended up here.

My dad had been here with my uncle for coffee and donuts and so wanted to try the food. He had the supreme cheeseburger and really liked it. It sure looked good. My mom and I split the cold turkey sandwich and coleslaw. I used the cranberry sauce to add some moisture and my mom used it and coleslaw. It was a very dry sandwich!! Sorry for no picture, it wasn’t worth it.

Shopping/eating:

So last fall I went to the Gluten Free Expo in Downtown Vancouver and had tried some products by Bake My Day. I was excited when I heard they were located in Duncan as I knew that was somewhat close to where my parents dock their boat. Well today, I made them drive around until we found this bakery. LOL I didn’t expect it to just be someone’s garage. 🤣It was set up as a full fledge bakery though.I was excited because I knew they had things that were gluten free and dairy free. It turned out only their tarts were ready made and gluten free and dairy free. They had six kinds that were safe for me and I bought one of each to try.

The first I tried was the lemon curd tart (top right). The lemon was sharp and tangy. The pastry was a little heavier than I would like but definitely not the worst I’ve had. My dad (who hates everything gf/df says the lemon was good, but the pastry needed to be done more. My mom says the lemon curd was wonderful and she wouldn’t know it was df/gf.

The baked lemon with raspberry tart was a surprise because the lemon was sweet and the raspberry was tart. I was expecting the opposite and think I would have enjoyed that more than the combo it was.

The final tart, again with a cute heart, was a strawberry rhubarb tart. It was a nice surprise as it had a hint of an orange citrus taste. The rhubarb was still slightly crunchy and it was a very yummy tart.

The caramel apple was the next to be sampled. I loved the little Apple on top. My dad says it’s a very distinct flavor and he liked it. I liked that the apple was still a little crunchy and it had a good cinnamon taste that was present but not overpowering. My mom liked the seasonings and was impressed the pastry didn’t taste like typical gf pastry.

The chocolate caramel had a delicious sweet topping that was a little crunchy. It was definitely sweeter than the other two. I liked the contrast between the tarter chocolate and the sweet topping.

The pumpkin (the bottom left) was very creamy tasty. I was a little surprised it didn’t have more of a cinnamon flavor.

While it was super nice to have a tart and to have choice in tart, I have to admit that I would probably order the lemon curd tart if I could only have one as you couldn’t tell it was gluten free and dairy free!

Sightseeing:

After the bakery, my dad had a couple of errands to run so my mom and I wandered the tourist section of Duncan. It was a super cute area with lots of outdoor decoration!

We went to a couple of stores. The first was an antique store that was lovely, clean, bright and smelled great!

We hit another store that contained a bunch of arts and crafts from a variety of artisans.

It was in this arts store that I found the perfect sign that describes my exercise today.

The third and final store we went into was so cute! I really love stores that have space in them so I don’t feel like a bull in a china Shop.

I founded the cutest West Coast growth chart for my friend’s baby. I’ll have to get it wrapped up and mailed to Regina.

We ended the day with a drink at a brew pub. I think it is the first time I have ordered a drink that I just couldn’t drink. I didn’t like it at all, but the decor was awesome!

Socializing:

We had to be home by a certain time as my parents go for Wings Wednesday with people from the marina and we couldn’t possibly miss that.

I had tuna steak on salad as the waitress said that was the safest thing for me to eat. Most of the table had wings, but my mom had wonderful looking nachos beside me.

It was an awesome final day, but I can’t believe I have to go home tomorrow:(

Once again my dad has a boat full of people so I must go be social.

Have fun!
