Hallmark Workout

So I was asked today about my Hallmark workout so I will share today’s version at the end.

Teaching:

Lol I actually had to have my kids put their heads down on their desk and think of someway they could make our classroom awesome this afternoon. The twenty five and six year olds just can’t contain their Christmas excitement anymore! We have Elf on the Shelf excitement and escapades and advent calendars. I’m guessing some of these sweet treats are getting eaten before schoolšŸ™„šŸ˜³

Today we got to 275 items for the food bank donation. Whatever else they are, these families are generous!

We tackled chalkboard spelling and actually made it to whole words!! I’m so excited!

We also did another patterning sheet that went really well. The kids were all done in twenty minutes and with no mistakes!

We had gym today where we had Christmas themed relay races. We galloped like reindeer, did the Santa shuffle, and skipped like elves.

This afternoon we tackled patterned paper chains, but I messed up. We will try them again if we have time. I may just cut the strips myself and have it as an early finishers activity.

After school I had the fun of handing in my report cards. Let’s hope there are no corrections!

Family:

I came home quite quickly as I had promised that I would take Gus for ice cream today. He had tons of options, but there weren’t many for me so I had eggnog again. It was great to see my brother and nephew again as it seems like forever and probably was Thanksgiving. The great news is that my sister in law says they are staying home for Christmas dinner and I can join them. Thankfully this isn’t against the rules as I’m single. Single people are allowed to choose a “family” to join. I was told I have to bring ice cream though.

Exercise:

I spent a lot of the evening trying to create a calendar for my mom on Costco, but it just keeps saying all my photos aren’t high enough resolution. Sorry mom, I did try!

Ok I was asked about my hallmark workouts. I will say there are tons of these on google and I change mine up all the time as I get bored. Sometimes they are all cardio moves, or input a cardio move in between weight moves for a minute, other times I assign two exercises to each movie feature to make the workout longer. For example one thing might be both squats and pliƩ squats. I usually assign five repetitions to each instance of the element. For example, one Christmas tree sighting might be worth five squats. I also have to admit I do a lot more movie elements than I see on the ones on Google. I also pay very close attention and get more instances as I want a harder/longer workout. Lots of these could be eliminated or combined.

Ok after all that, here’s what I did tonight.

I watched the movie Christmas Unleashed, which I have to admit is not my favorite, but it did the trick.

The elements I looked for:

Baking/cooking/cookies-3

Bright jacket- none seen

Snow falling/ sledding/ snowball fight-1

Hot drinks-4

Christmas tree or tree farm-8

Family tradition-1

Skating-none

Hugs/ kisses -7

Merry Christmas-12

Santa-1

Town Event-1

Ugly sweater-2

Caroling-none

Festive name-none

Presents/ present wrapping/ unwrapping-1

Decorating/ decorations-5

Mention of holiday spirit-1

Sleigh/carriage-3

Awkward moment-4

Mention of a miracle-3

A fireplace/ fire pit-2

Advice from older relative-5

Flashback-5

Some elements are added or deleted, depending on the movie. Flashbacks were added for this movie.

What I ended up doing:

15 front raises

Plank ( I took all the single instances and did a plank to the next minute so I ended up doing a 30 sec, 45 sec, 5 sec, 50 sec, 15 sec, 35 sec planks)

20 tricep extensions

40 squats

35 pliƩ squats

60 crunches

10 mountain climbers per side

25 bicycle crunches

15 bent over rows

20 bicep curls

25 deadlifts

15 lateral raises

25 hip raises

10 sit ups

25 reverse crunches

I know I make this way more difficult than it needs to be.

If you want something simple I would recommend 10 jumping jacks every time someone says Merry Christmas, 5 squats every time there is a tree sighting, and 5 push-ups every time there is a hug or kiss. You’d probably get a good starting workout that way.

Well now you all know my horrible secret- I complicate everything!

Have fun!

PJ Day

I really didn’t mean to spend the day in my pajamas!

House:

I got busy this morning and did my one task of housework. I had to change the order as my floors were in desperate need of cleaning, so all sweeping and vacuuming got done today. I’m glad I got at least that done!

Relaxing:

I have to admit I spent most of the day eating berries, playing scrabble, reading and watching a Hallmark movie.

Exercise:

Thank goodness I had arranged to run with Sarah today or I never would have gotten out of my pajamas. We did a 5km to the mill and back and boy was it hot and a little busier than I like.

I then came home and did a Hallmark workout which was a minute of jogging between: front raises, crunches, lateral raises, squats, pliƩ squats, deadlifts, burpees, tricep extensions, mountain climbers, pullovers, reverse crunches and bicep curls.

I really need a massage though! My body is getting very sore and creaky.

I know I should be knitting or stitching, but I think I’m going to go back to reading my book.

Have fun!

Visiting Is Good

Well not only does visiting my parents improve my mood and my hug-o-meter, it also apparently, improves my fitness.

Exercise:

I got up super early this morning and met Dennis for a long run. I wasn’t sure how it was going to go, but I managed a 10km PR! I actually got faster as the run went on and at one point was keeping up with Dennis at a 5:52/km (this is fast for me)! It felt really good to get back to normal and have a long run, but I guess all those hills of the past week, made me stronger.

I also got a Hallmark workout in this evening. I did a minute of jogging between crunches, squats, front raises, pliƩ squats, burpees, pushups, lateral raises, reverse crunches, bent over rows, bicep curls, mountain climbers, full weighted sit ups, and deadlifts. I really need to go pick up some heavier weights and I need to remember to take some weights with me when I visit my parents.

Hallmark workouts seem great for right now- I get to watch a movie and hopefully get into better shape.

Shopping:

After a tea with the Sunday group and a quick shower, I met up with Lyndsay to go out to a local berry farm. We started with Krause Berry Farms which my mom and I went to last summer.

This was from last year as this year the winery wasn’t open and there were lineups to get into the market and to get waffles. We must have arrived at a very busy time, about 1:15 as the lineups were much longer then than when we came out. It wasn’t as enjoyable in the market as you can’t touch anything unless you are buying it and you can’t really take your time as you have to stay in your spot in the lineup that goes through. I did go a little crazy with berries, but am telling myself I just bought all my berries at one time this year.

The one extra container of raspberries is for my friend Sarah, though now I realize I could have just given her one out of my flat. Oh well!

On the way back we passed Driedeger Farms which neither of us had been to. We decided to stop and take a look so we would know which we liked better. I think Krause Berry Farms is what Driedeger Farms wants to be when they grow up. Driedeger is much smaller and seems to be much more focused on U-pick. It is nice to actually know that now:)

I have to admit that I have been lazy the rest of the day and have just been reading and playing scrabble. I had better get back into the cross stitch and knitting daily habit quickly!

Oh and I am starting to think about road trip food so if anyone has any suggestions of what has worked for them, I’d love to hear them!

Have fun!

Almost Back

Today almost felt like an AJ day:)

Exercise:

I had texted Sarah last night and she was up for a run so we headed out in the pouring rain for a quick run to the mill and back. It’s a good thing I was meeting someone as I don’t think I would have gotten out otherwise!

This evening I did a Hallmark workout. It was a minute of jogggng between: squats, reverse lunges, pushups, mountain climbers, weighted sit ups, bicep curls, upright rows, reverse crunches, pliƩ squats, burpees, deadlifts and overhead tricep extensions.

I am really trying to put at least one different exercise each time, but I figure I need the squats and lunges in there for sure to make me a stronger runner.

Reading:

I finished the book Wallbanger by Alice Clayton. I have had this book forever but was very hesitant to start it based on the title. It ended up being a cute, funny book. I admit the end seemed to drag and was a little dumb, but it was still a good read.

It was really nice to have an actual book. I know my kindle app and Kobo are great for traveling or when I’m out and about, but nothing beats a real book.

House:

I knew I needed to do something, but all I got done was my rug vacuumed and the floors swept. I’m going to try my best to do one job a day this week so my house will be tidy and clean by the time I’m on holidays. I wish one of you lived close enough to check that I do this!šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

Knitting:

I actually picked up knitting again. When I went to get my bag, I realized I hadn’t recorded or shared the quick and easy kerchief scarf I made on my trip last weekend.

Now I have started my toe up sock. It should get me through my travel next weekend, but I need to pick a project to take with me.

Cooking:

I really should have started the baking challenge today, but the only thing I did in my kitchen was make kale chips from some of the kale in my garden. They were really good.

Well, I think that’s it. A lovely, rainy day:)

Have fun!

Wildlife

It was a zoo out there!

Teaching:

I turned off my alarm so I got a little extra sleep today and after a quick roar around the grocery store, I sat down to my computer.

Today I checked all the work that had been submitted, responded to emails, listened to children read, entered my PR cards and found the list of approved resources. It was nice to get through everything on the list for a change.

Family:

This afternoon I grabbed my nephew and I did my work in the car while he hung out at the skate park. We then enjoyed an ice cream. Even he admits the newest ice cream place I found is the best!

Exercise:

At lunch I did 6.77km with my friend Sarah. We saw one deer on the first part of the trail, had a run in with a bear cub who was stubborn and just wouldn’t go away and then saw a doe and her two fawns on the way back. It was like a National Geographic episode out there! We did get back in one piece and it was nice to get a bit of mileage in.

This evening I did another hallmark workout. I did a minute of jogging between: squats, burpees, deadlifts, bicep curls, front raises, crunches, reverse crunches, bent over rows, pushups, pliƩ squats, lateral raises, pullovers, tricep kickbacks and hip raises.

We will see if this contributes to my feeling healthier.

Right now all I want is to close my eyes so I think I will take myself off to bed.

Have fun!

Tuesday Trials

I really can’t wait for this school year to be over!

Teaching:

I had four students in class today. My autistic child pitched a fit and got to stay home- no wonder we are having trouble with him in class! He has gotten used to getting everything he wants:(

We did some running, read some books, started our Covid 19 Time Capsule booklet, worked on our year book and then learned about rolly polly bugs and built homes for them outside. Actually a pretty good day until you get to the meeting after school.

We had a CDMC meeting and I had to take the minutes. I sent them out, but figure I’ll hear about it that I didn’t send them to my principal first. I’m thinking I’d better be really careful the next two weeks so that I don’t get written up :(. I hate that I now worry about every little thing I došŸ˜„

Exercise:

I met Dennis for a run. He is still having trouble with his breathing and is supposed to go see a cardiologist so I am making him take it easy by running my speed. We did 6.19km today and I only had to call him back once. It was nice to get some distance in. I’ve had two weeks in a row where I haven’t made thirty kilometers and I want to break that pattern quick!

I also did a workout. I decided to go back to a Hallmark workout as my legs felt really weak on my run today. I feel like, as dumb as they may be, the Hallmark workouts really are a good workout. I did a minute of jogging between the following;

Burpees, deadlifts, bent over rows, squats, reverse lunges, front raises, pushups, bicep curls, curtsy lunges, crunches, reverse crunches, and pliƩ squats.

I think that that is all I have to report today. I had better finish a book or start some knitting so I’m not boring!

Have fun!

Thunderous Thursday

It was thunderous!

Teaching:

We got through writing directions in Writer’s Workshop this morning which is one of my favourite lessons to teach!

After recess I was just going down to get the principal to deal with my boys throwing yogurt around a girl who has severe allergies when I ran into a father who was coming to talk to our class about his job as a police officer. Of course, he was a week early but I didn’t mention that. I alerted Liane to it and we went with it. Of course it meant that I also missed my prep today:(. The kids loved the presentation as he had also brought the prisoner van for them to see. It was definitely the highlight of their week, I think.

This afternoon we had a second parent presentation from a speech and language pathologist. It was interesting, but also brought back lots of memories, ughhh, all those hours!!!

Finally we had gymnastics and the new teacher was great! The kids had a really good time and it was well run:)

We had the kids Bookclub after school and it was smaller than usual, but still enjoyable:)

Finally we finished our prep, posted our report cards and I got to come home:)

Exercise:

I was wanting to run after school, but for some reason I had a very unhappy stomach after school, but this evening I managed to at least do a hallmark workout. I did a minute of jogging between these exercises:

Pullovers, squats, pushups, Bridges, burpees, mountain climbers, bicep curls, froggers, military press, front raise, pliƩ squats, reverse lunges, crunches and reverse crunches

Something is always better than nothing!

Well I’m going back to my book!

Have fun!

Another Pain?!

I woke up this morning with a painful right eye and it got progressively more sore all day. I finally got into the shower and let the water run over it. I’m hoping that between the shower and a good night’s sleep it will go away!!!

Teaching:

Ugh my students just don’t seem to be improving. It makes it tough to keep going when you don’t see any results from your efforts. Maybe tomorrow there will be a glimmer.

Today we wrote a journal and I have to admit they worked well and most got a good amount done. Of course there are still those ones who think that one sentence is enough. I got a couple of children to the point where they could do a bit of editing and we had time to read a couple of them. I only had to make one little girl reread because we couldn’t hear her at all. It’s a good thing I have to write this because t made me realize the day started better than I thought.

Math after recess wasn’t bad either as we started subtraction today and just did hands on practice with manipulatives. I was supposed to be counting back on the number line, but they were engaged so we kept on with what we were doing. I wish there were more of me as it wasn’t until nearing the end that I got around to one little girl and realized she was still trying to add:(

I got three children’s reading assessed during the quiet time and silent reading and we got a lesson on lacrosse. I tried to do a lesson on a new reading strategy- trying a different vowel sound- but they just couldn’t sit still.

They weren’t great listeners during lacrosse either which was super embarrassing since we had the captain of Vancouver’s professional lacrosse team in to do a lesson. It was great and included the history of lacrosse too. The guy was great and you could totally tell he has kids himself.

I also had a talk with my kids about the fact that while they might do something well, there is always room for improvement. So many of my students want to be perfect the first time or think they are perfect the first time. I have a colleague who calls it the result of the confetti generation and I can certainly see that.

Knitting:

After writing four report cards I headed home to finish up my test knit. I have finished and love the end result. I have sent an email to see if I can share about it, so you’ll know when I know:)

Exercise:

I knew it would be super easy to wimp out of working out today so I arranged to have Lyndsay text me later to make sure I had.

I did a simple Hallmark workout again, but tried to get a few new moves in. I did a minute of jogging while lifting or holding 8lb weights between each of these moves:

Burpees, froggers, squats, pliƩ squats, push ups, dips, upright rows, around the world lunges, bicycle crunches, Russian twists, pullovers, Bridges, twisted mountain climbers, military press, bicep curls, front raises, crunches, reverse crunches, plank.

I’m glad I did it, but was much happier once I was in the shower!

Have fun!

Solid Saturday

It was a pretty good day. I got to do things I enjoy, but I had to do certain things which does take some of the fun away.

Exercise:

Dennis and I ran a new route this morning- the Central Valley Greenway. We intercepted it at Sperling and ran the 5.28km to Boundary and back. This is an urban trail that only has one section of packed gravel and the rest is paved. I don’t think I would run it alone as it runs behind buildings and through industrial parks. Dennis thinks it probably gets pretty busy on summer nights and we probably passed twenty people during the 10km we did, but still seems secluded to me.

My legs were tight the whole time and my left Achilles was bugging me. At four km I was ready to say, let’s go find a skytrain station and go home, but good running buddy that he is, Dennis kept me going. I had done a workout last night instead of a run, but maybe my legs would be better if I reversed those two?

We did the whole 10.04km and I had a personal best with doing it in 1:05:21, that is down from 1:07.

This evening I did a hallmark workout as I am trying to keep my workouts and my runs equal.

I decided to jog between moves and did: squats, crunches, reverse crunches, front, side and back raises, froggers, burpees, bicep curls, around the world lunges, pliƩ squats, pushups, and dips.

I hope one day that these workouts pay off!

Knitting:

After coffee, I came home and started the toque I am making for the secretary’s daughter. It’s an easy knit as it’s done in seed stitch which is one of my favourite stitches. Right now, I’m just worried that the yarn is going to be too dense to slouch, but I suppose we shall see.

Reading:

I have spent a lot of today reading my Bookclub book. I am almost halfway which is probably the best I can hope for as the book is 579 pages long. I am making this post short so I can get back to it.

Cooking:

I made my second Fresh Prep meal today which was Hoisin meatballs with broccoli and coconut rice. This recipe took me 32 minutes from turning the stove on to taking my first bite. It would have been less if I had remembered to take the ground pork out to de thaw and hadn’t had to take the 2.5 minutes to microwave defrost it in the middle. The recipe was easy to follow and simple to do. With both of these recipes I have felt that I could probably memorize the recipe if I made it a couple of more times. I also got four servings out of this recipe too so I should have plenty to get me through until the next two meals show up on Wednesday. I would like to get to the point where I can get six servings out of each meal as then I could freeze a couple and build my stash back up as my freezer is very empty right now.

Eating:

I have eaten really well today! I had a bag of honey stinger chews on my run as I was trying to give myself energy. I had a serving of my shrimp pad Thai for breakfast, and then taco salad for launch and then the meatballs and rice and broccoli for dinner. I wasn’t planning on the last meal, but realized later in the day that I needed to get that meal cooked up.

Well that is my whole day and I need to go read my book.

Have fun!

AJ

Monday Misery

Well I can no longer deny it- I woke up with a cold:(

Teaching:

Between epic sneezes (as my students called them) we got a journal written about whether we like or don’t like snow, a lesson on adding zero, writing about our hip hop on Friday, and a polar bear labeling session. As well as the usual calendar, quiet time, gym, and silent reading.

We all survived, but I definitely didn’t have my usual patience.

Baking:

My bread baking today was a disaster, but I’ll try again this weekend and tell you all about it then.

Knitting:

Still knitting the stockinette on the sockhead slouch and listening to Yarniacs podcasts. I am just so excited to finally be knitting something from my queue and I’m loving the look of this yarn!

Exercise:

I really wanted to run today, but after sneezing all day I just couldn’t drag myself out in the rain for a run, so it was just another hallmark workout for me. I’m getting close to being out of Christmas movies!

Tonight I did a minute of skipping between squats, crunches, burpees, dips, froggers, pliƩ squats, reverse lunges, curtsy lunges, lateral lunges, Bridges, reverse crunches, pushups, and high knees.

I am really hoping that the more consistent body weight workouts will help me improve my running, though I realize I’ll have to add weight to them to really see improvement. I’m thinking that will come when I switch to regular workouts when I’m done my Christmas movies.

Well I’m off to bed as tomorrow is going to be crazy busy!

Have fun!
