Active, Active, Active

It has been a very active day which I love as it always makes me feel fit:)

Exercise:

I met up with Dennis this morning for a bike ride. It was slightly more successful than the last time we rode bikes, but I am definitely not yet a good cyclist. I realized I am quite nervous turning, but I think that comes from the fact I went headfirst into a ravine as a teenager because I didn’t turn enough. I’ll just keep going and we’ll see if I ever improve🤣

I left tea with Dennis to meet up with my friend Emily for a socially distanced walk around Coquitlam River. It was awesome to catch up with her and being with her makes things fun and normal.

When I realized I only needed 10.55km to get to a nice round number, I knew I had to go out and try. I ended up going at 5pm which wasn’t the best as it’s been a super hot day, but I survived and lived to tell the tale. The run went fine though just before the end I had a rush of tingles through my right leg. I wonder what that is about?

Overall this month, I ran 20 times for a total of 126.36km. I worked out 14 times, did 4 yoga sessions and went on 3 bike rides for a total of 35.75km. I know that next month I really need to do more workouts and more yoga!

I will be giving an update on my run to Rapid City tomorrow.

Socializing:

I met up with another friend for a quick look at the bookstore and to get my gift card fixed. I of course, came home with more additions to my TBR, but no physical books. I think I’m just going to order the ones I want from the store online as they didn’t have them in person.

Knitting:

I have been working on my sweater today and kept thinking that it seemed big. Tonight I decided to take the time to put it on waste yarn and try it on. Well

This is how much extra I had. I’ve ripped it all out and think I’ll stick to the shawl for now as I may be starting a test knit.

Well I’m going to rest my weary body.

Have fun!

Stretching My Skills with Sally

Well it was a busy day that unfortunately included a dud.

Exercise:

I had my day planned out and knew I had to get my run in early if it was going to get done, especially with the heat. I got a lovely 5.5km to the mill and back.

This afternoon I did some weights. 36 each of: bent over rows, banded front raises, bicep curls, overhead tricep extension, pullovers, chest press, shoulder press, plank, crunches, bicycle crunches, reverse crunch with a toe tap, Russian twists, scissor legs, heel touches, squats, curtsy lunge, plié squat, adductors, calf raises, banded side shuffle, and hip bridges.

I’m sure there’s muscle under the heat wave bloat!

Baking:

Last Saturday I was supposed to share my July baking challenge, but I was waiting until I had somewhere to take the cake so that I didn’t eat it all.

Today I grabbed ingredients at the grocery store and got to work early before it got even hotter. I had decided to do lemon cupcakes with cream and blueberries. I decided on the cupcakes so that it would make it easier to divide up, during this time of Covid when no one is supposed to share food.

The cupcakes were quick and easy. I only had to change the butter to vegan butter spread and the milk to oat milk for these. They didn’t rise much, but they had a great lemon taste.

I had decided to use coco whip as my cream because dairy free whipping cream uses full fat coconut milk which is often too rich for me and the light doesn’t turn into whipping cream.

I got the cupcakes, the whip and the blueberries out to start the process, only to learn that coco whip doesn’t like 33 degree weather.

It was a disaster!! The coco whip slid right off the cupcake and took the blueberries with it.

I ended up not taking these anywhere and scraped the remaining coco whip off and froze the cupcakes.

Make sure you check out Abbey (Three Cats and a Girl) and Kathy (Sewing etc) to see how their baking challenge went. I’m sure better than mine!

Socializing:

I met up with my friend Anna and her two sons at a local park and were lucky enough to have it pretty much to ourselves. The distancing was a little tough but we did our best and avoided direct contact. It was awesome to see them as I haven’t since February!

I then grabbed Gus and we went to have ice cream. It was a quick trip as he had plans to go fishing with a fiend so I dropped him off on my way home. I’m happy with even a short Gus fix:)

Knitting:

After a 2.5 hour nap, I spent some time getting a few pattern repeats on the shawl done and a couple of rows towards the 3″ of knitting stockinette in the round I have to do for the sweater.

That isn’t day!

Have fun!

AJ

Socializing

I always find it tough to ask people to do things as I’m afraid I’m bothering them, but this week I made it a challenge to arrange a friend outing each day. Yesterday I took a friend for ice cream, and today I managed an outing too:)

Exercise:

I tried to do a workout this morning, but my body just wasn’t having it. I stopped and sat back down on the couch and knitted. I had my first massage in four months and it turns out it’s been my psosa that has been giving me trouble. It is a very deep hip flexor and boy does it feel much better now!

Socializing:

Last week when I was walking in the other side of town I had seen that a new cidery had opened up. I arranged to meet two friends there this afternoon for a late lunch. It turned out that we had to sit inside because it was pouring when we got there. Of course it was beautiful by the time we were leaving. It also turned out its a brewery, not a cidery. They only had one type of cider. It was okay, but nothing I have to make the twenty minute walk for.

It was super nice to catch up with friends though and I’m the one who arranged it, so I take that as a major success!

I ordered mixed nuts and olives and they came in a plastic container, like you get in the bulk section of the grocery store. I am really hoping this is just because of the Covid Pandemic as it really didn’t add to the atmosphere at all!

Crafting:

After a lovely two hour nap, I spent the evening knitting on my sweater and watching a Hallmark movie I had never seen before. Both were very enjoyable.

Well I’m tired again, so I think I’ll go crawl into bed.

Have fun!

Two For Two

Well I got two things done that I should have gotten done.

Exercise:

As I was laying in bed this morning, my running buddy texted to say run without her. I decided that I had better just get it done right away as it would get less and less likely as the day went on. At least today’s 5km run was better than yesterday’s. My hip flexor (I think) is still bugging me, but definitely not as bad as yesterday.

I also got a weights workout in this afternoon. I changed up what I did and took the cardio out of it. I did three sets of ten reps with decreasing weight for: military press, overhead tricep extension, bicep curl, crunches, reverse crunches with a heel tap, bent over rows, pullovers, Russian twists, side to side heel touches, and hip raises. It didn’t burn a lot of calories, but at some point I’d really like to see some muscle tone!

Chores:

I got my bathroom wiped down which was my daily job today and I got my house insurance renewed. It’s a good thing I got these two things done as nothing else got done.

Socializing:

I met up with a fellow teacher friend for a walk (six feet apart) over to the ice cream store. She had never been to Vashti Rose, so I of course had to introduce her, and she of course, loved it! I had the blood orange with a little taster of lemon pineapple and they were great! On our way over there we saw:

I’m embarrassed to say that I have walked by this cuteness several times and never noticed it. I think my story is going to be that it is new and wasn’t there the last several times I was in the area. I now also know my friend is way more observant than me.🤣

Reading:

I have spent all day reading in any little time I had. I finished Get a Life Chloe Brown by Thalia Hibbert. I have to admit this was a slow start for me as it seemed odd and I didn’t love how they talked to each other, but once I hit their email exchange, I was hooked. I would recommend the book as a good, fluffy summer read and I will definitely be reading the next in the series.

Crafts:

I actually got both stitching and knitting done this evening:)🎊🎉. I just needed to get going on the podcasts and it all fell into place. You will see the stitching on Sunday and hopefully the knitting soon.

Well that’s my day folks!

Have fun!

AJ

A Glimmer

Sorry I thought I had posted last night, but I have to admit I was really tired!

Exercise:

I got up early yesterday so Dennis and I could do a ten k along the Central Valley greenway. This is an urban trail in the city next to mine to the west. It is definitely not a run I would do alone and we both agreed that there are a lot of bikes on it. Fair enough it is meant to be a bike route.

The nearest thing was being able to compare yesterday to when we did the exact same run in February. I was about a minute faster this time😀

Right before I crawled into bed last night I did a quick seventeen minutes of cardio as I try to keep my runs and workouts even. I just randomly picked moves and did them 100 times- squats, plié squats, high knees, front kicks, roundhouse kicks, rear leg raise, calf raises, jabs, hooks, and crosses.

Teaching:

I managed to get through all the work including the RAZ kids and Prodigy. I have one little guy who has gone through four levels of books! I am so proud of him!!

The best moment came at the end of the night when I got an email from one of the parents in my class. Their son has been diagnosed with ADHD in kindergarten. For comparison, most kids don’t get assessed and diagnosed until grade four, so that tells you how extreme he is. He has been one of my biggest concerns with going back to school, but they’ve realized it wouldn’t be best for him and are keeping him home!!🎊🎉. I am so glad!! I just couldn’t imagine him trying to sit there all day!

Knitting:

One bootie (not wheels or sole) done and onto the second:). Finally progress! I want these things done for Tuesday so this may be my top priority today.

Socializing:

Only three teachers could gather today so two of them brought their husbands who are friends and we had a garden party. It was an awesome afternoon as the two ladies are the two in the group I have been friends with the longest.

The rhubarb dream bars were a hit so I suggest checking them out if you have rhubarb in your garden.

Cooking:

I decided at the last minute that I had better take a second thing in case there was nothing else I could eat. I didn’t have a lot in the house, but threw a large spoonful of mayo, sour cream and cream cheese into a bowl, added a can of shrimp, and a quarter tsp of garlic powder, salt and pepper and mixed it all together. I put a dollop of seafood cocktail on top in the centre and some chives from my garden and I got compliments! Another easy, quick recipe if you need one.

I collapsed at the end of the day as it was a really long day, but now I’m back for more!

Have fun!

Purple Day

Why does everyday bring questions and no answers???

Exercise:

I met up with Dennis and we did a rerun of a run we tried to do a couple of weeks ago but abandoned because it was too busy. Today was much better, especially after my legs loosened up at 4km. I dropped about 30 seconds per kilometer after that. I am finding that my runs are way harder lately and I’m not as fast. I’ve been reading and it seems like this might be a side effect of trying to lose weight. Hopefully it won’t last forever and I can go back to being faster.

This evening I tried to do a workout, but only managed seven minutes when I realized I just wasn’t into it tonight. I’ll try to make up for it on Sunday.

Teaching:

It was a quieter day as all I had to do was check work on the three different platforms. It’s a good thing because I came home from my run to a power outage.

I listened to the premier speak and though he said we would be going back to school on June 1st, there were still no details of how this is going to work. For the month of June it is voluntary whether kids come to school which means I have to teach online and in class. I’m really not sure how this is going to work:(. All I know so far is that I don’t think anyone who works with six year olds is making the decisions!😖🙄

Shopping:

I probably shouldn’t be allowed out of the house alone with my Visa card. Lately I’ve been finding that I need more water as my runs get warmer and longer. My hydration pack is about fifteen years old and doesn’t owe me anything. I was looking for a cheap pack online, but ended up buying a new one at my local running store. I really do prefer to support local when I can.

My new, very purple Nathan hydration pack. I’m going to look interesting when I wear red!

Reading:

I finally finished one of my current books. I had been listening to Born To Run by Christopher MacDougall. It was a super interesting book that took a lot of different elements and connected them through the story of a race. It was great, though I think it would be better to listen to it than read it.

Socializing:

I had my usual Friday teacher meet up in a local park. It was definitely busier than it has been in the past. It was nice to catch up and our friend Cori joined us today too. It’s nice to not feel alone in this craziness!

Knitting:

I finally finished my newest sweater tonight. It is the Seraphina sweater by Irina Anikeeva, available on Ravelry. The shoulders are the most complicated part of the sweater and after that it is good social knitting. The yarn I used was a new to me yarn called Gathering Yarn: The Harvest is Here. I like the colour of the yarn, but found it to be quite splitty.

Well that’s the end of my purple day!

Have fun!

AJ

Talking Tuesday

Life was pretty typical here today.

Exercise:

I went out for my run this morning but really didn’t want to. I just can’t figure out my days off as this is the third run day in a row so my legs are getting tired! I am running with Dennis tomorrow so hopefully they are better then! I got five kilometers in, but it wasn’t pretty or fast. I don’t want to take every other day off, but I need fresh legs for Friday and Sunday for sure!

This evening I did another BeFitDavis workout. This was her upper body workout and had me doing pike pushups, row to tricep extension, circle raises and military press with a shoulder rotation. I think I’m definitely going to feel this tomorrow!

Teaching:

It was a pretty typical day of checking work, planning for next week and then having a boring staff meeting. Everyone was celebrating how great the report samples online were, but they sure didn’t seem great to me yesterday when I looked at them! I finished the day by checking more student work and creating my Microsoft Teams classroom. I guess I have to try this out at some time!

Knitting:

I have been knitting on the body of my sweater, when suddenly today I got the idea that I should go do the collar and the arm cuffs so that I could then use up all possible yarn for the length. I am almost done the neckline right now and plan to finish before I go to bed. Knitting during the staff meeting really helped in getting the sweater done and keeping me calm.

Reading:

I finished a book last night called Ayesha at Last. It is a spin off of Pride and Prejudice set in a Muslim Canadian community. It was excellent! I really liked how there were enough similarities to P&P that you could tell who people were supposed to be and a couple of the best lines were included, but it was still different enough to hold my attention. The Muslim community seemed a great fit for this book.

Socializing:

I have been listening to an audio book from the library and I had gone to the kitchen when I realized that my book had stopped. My friend Cori was calling me and I had an awesome end to my night visiting with her:)

Eating:

I’ve had another good day and hopefully it will be enough to give me a good weigh in number tomorrow! I’ve had:

Runner’s waffle

Strawberries

Kiwi and almonds

Hamburger patty with guacamole

European wiener

I’m sure there’s something else, but once again, my mind is blanking.

Well I have to get back and finish my last two rows of the neckline so that I will have a sweater to show you soon!

Have fun!

AJ

Kind To Myself

I didn’t start out with this plan, but I mostly spent the day being kind to myself.

Exercise:

My running buddy texted early this morning to cancel my run. I considered getting up and going for a run by myself but instead rolled over and slept for another three hours. I’m not sure I’ve ever slept in that late!

I did go for a nice long walk, 7.5km after breakfast. I started out toward the park, but there were just too many people, so I looped around and walked down to my old house and back. It was a lovely day and I listened to a MTA podcast, but boy does walking take a long time!

This evening I did a yoga with Adrienne video on YouTube. I’m not sure I like her as much as the other one I did as she spent a lot of time talking, but I’m hoping that was just because it was the first class in a series.

Eating:

I have been craving an oatmeal raisin cookie for a couple of weeks now so today I made myself one- well actually the recipe made two. I had those, a hamburger patty, veggies and hummus, and cheese on toast. Not great, but not too horrible. I’m dreaming of baking all the yummy things and thinking that if my mom gives me warning of when she is coming, I’ll make us a high tea. I was going to take her for one downtown, but it might be a long time still before that opens up.

Socializing:

After a lovely two hour nap, I spent an hour on Zoom with two of my closest friends. It was so great to see them! Even better to hear their voices and catch up. My friend downtown is pretty well just stuck inside because it’s so busy everywhere there:(. My other friend has a husband and two very young sons and says other than not seeing other family and friends, her life doesn’t seem that different. It made my day visiting with them.

Knitting:

I spent some time knitting in the cool shade of my bedroom and going in circles. I am doing stockinette in the round right now, so I mean circles literally. I’m hoping that maybe this sweater will be done this week:)

I ended the night with a Epsom salts bath and am going to crawl into bed with a book. A pretty nice day overall!

Have fun!

AJ

Happy Weekend!

Another good day- boy I wonder how long I can keep this going??

Exercise:

I got out for a 9.39km fun in the neighborhood with Dennis. We even included a little bit of trail, though I learned I slow down massively on the trails. I felt like I was having to work really hard on the run even though I wasn’t going that fast, but I’m the end, I would call it a good run.

This evening I did a total body strength workout from BeFitDavis. I had to do squat with bicep curl to shoulder press, reverse lunge with bicep curl to row, side lunge with reach to single leg press, and a squat to diagonal front raise. I definitely felt some of those moves after four sets!!

Teaching:

It was a pretty good day. I only had to check work on all the different platforms, so that was nice:)

Socializing:

I did my usual teacher meetup from six feet away. It’s always so nice to have time with friends! I come home feeling rejuvenated and calmer. The only thing that will be better is when my mom shows up to hug me!

I did notice on the way home a sign that said the local lake was full. I sure hope people aren’t forgetting g the social distancing already or we might be in for some trouble!

Baking:

I did some baking, but you’ll hear about that at the end of the month.

House:

I got y laundry done and my house plants watered. I even got my bike oiled. I think the kickstand was pressing against the wheel. Hopefully I will get out tomorrow to test it out.

Knitting:

I had the chance to sit out on my deck and enjoy the sunshine as I was knitting. I’m glad I’m finally getting motivated with this sweater. I’m not sure I’ve ever had a sweater take this long before. I think I’m about 9 rows away from joining in the round:)

Eating:

Not a great day, but thankfully I burned a lot of calories with my run. I was just thinking today that I feel like I’m on the road back to eating appropriate sized meals.

Mini kind bar, 3 honey stinger chews

Veggie soup, 2 slices corned beef deli meat (I really wish there was an ash way to get protein without the salt of deli meat!)

Homemade bread with cheese and avocado

1.75 baked good

Reading:

I finished listening to The Semi Attached Couple by Emily Eden. I really enjoyed this book and liked that it ended happily for everyone:). I Lao really like the narrator, Elizabeth Klett. I’ll have to look on LibriVox and find another book she has read.

Well I’m going to curl up with a book:)

Have fun!

AJ

Friday Eve, but Really Friday

It is only Thursday which is usually Friday Eve, but since it’s a long weekend, Thursday became Friday:)

Work:

I did end up taking today off from my morning run so it was just straight into work. L and I got all twenty activities posted into Fresh Grade for next week. I am starting to feel like I can handle FreshGrade, but One Drive is killing me. I need to find a manual for it! I was actually pretty impressed with myself as I watched the lunch webinar on Fresh Grade today and I knew everything g they said already. Woohoo🎉🎊

House:

It was floors day today so I swept on my recess break and then vacuumed and washed my kitchen floor on my lunch break. I can’t believe how clean and tidy my house is from just ten minutes a day- it’s lovely!

Baking:

I found baking powder so I got to make another loaf of my Hearty Beer Bread from the Allergy Free Cook Bakes Bread book. The crumb turned out beautifully, but the crust on the sides and bottom was super tough while the top crust was crumbly. If anyone knows what I’m doing wrong, please tell me. I have enough ginger ale left for one more loaf which may just happen this weekend.

I actually ate enough bread this morning that I didn’t need lunch so I didn’t eat again until I made a simple shrimp linguini for dinner. I had never made this before, but it was pretty yummy!

Wow as I write this I realize I’ve eaten nothing but carbs today😳

Knitting:

I’m still working on the body of this sweater. It has been made easier by listening to podcasts. So far I’m listening to Gin and Cake and Pastry Pals. I don’t love either but they are the two podcasts that cover the first American season of the Great British Baking Show so I have to stick with them. I think for season three I get a different podcast:)

Socializing:

I met up with three colleagues for a chat in the gorgeous sunshine today. We met in the parking lot across from my place as we actually had to do some trading of resources, but it was so great to see people and talk to them. one of the ladies brought me these beautiful tulips for Easter. Don’t worry we maintained our six feet of distance:)

Exercise:

This evening I did 32 minutes of yoga and some foam rolling. I decided to change my day off this week after yesterday’s disastrous run. We will see how tomorrow goes as to whether I need a second day off this week. I hope not as I’m finally getting some mileage in. I do however, need to find a listing of yoga poses as I’m just doing the ones I remember from years ago.

Well that’s it for me.

Have fun!
