Friyay!

Even on holidays, I like Fridays!

Exercise:

I met Dennis for his favourite trail run. It is not my favourite, but I figure I’d better do this one for him sometimes. I always seem to be slow on this trail run. It is an out and back along a river to a waterfall. I know that I will be slow on the way out because it is all slightly uphill, but the trail is also technical so I never really feel like I get into a groove with my running. It did give me 7.56km more towards my goal which is important since we are approaching the end of the month!

I unfortunately didn’t plan well and didn’t get any other exercise in today because I had a massage. After paying for a massage I try to enjoy the benefits for at least a day!

Socializing:

After a lovely nap, I met up with a friend and her husband. I had texted her in the morning to let her know I had her shirt and some baking for her kids. Her and her husband came down and we had a great visit in the park across the street. I wish I got to do this type of thing more often!

Knitting:

I have been busy knitting away on my Weekender and I actually finally undid the previous start as I committed to this newer, slightly smaller sized one.

I hope this works well as I went to put away my Seraphina sweater today and I’m so disappointed that it is just so big on me! I hate doing all this work to end up with something that doesn’t fit well:(

Reading:

I always try to hold off until I’ve finished a book before talking about it, but this one I can’t resist. I am listening to Better Than Before by Gretchen Rubin and am absolutely loving it. It is all about making and keeping habits. It has definitely made me think about myself and what I want my life to be about. The bonus today is that it got me to do a little tidying around the house too.

Well, I think that’s everything about my day.

Trail Thursday

It was another great holiday day, though with a small worry in it:(

Shopping:

I headed out this morning and bought ten pounds of blueberries. I put them in the backseat so I wouldn’t eat them all before I got home, but I still put a sizeable hole in them. They’re just so good! I realized that I am very loyal when a place is good. I’ve been buying from Never Say Die nursery for a very long time. I’m going to have to try some of their eggs and other veggies as they looked so good!

I stopped on my way back from there at Amsterdam Nursery. I explained that my last cilantro plant must have come with a caterpillar and that he had eaten all but one leaf by the time I got home from holidays. I just wanted to know if it would regrow, but they gave me a new plant:). I also picked up a new lavender plant and got instructions on it too. I’m going to need to start putting labels on my plants as to when I’m supposed to water them! Amsterdam is definitely another place I am loyal to. There are closer nurseries but they have awesome customer service and are so helpful and knowledgeable!

Family:

I had just gotten home after dealing with construction in every direction when my nephew texted to see if we could check out another ice cream place. I had actually already taken him when he was a kid, but we went again. This is La Casa Gelato on Venables and it boasts 238 different flavors including garlic, wasabi, maple bacon, Caesar, and a whole ton more. They had a couple of freezers of sorbetto so I got to choose from them and ended up with orange crush and lemon iced tea. Gus had a triple scoop of three very yummy ones. We both agreed that it was neat to see all the flavors but was super expensive and the people weren’t all that nice. They had attitude:(

They did however have a lovely garden across the street where we could sit and eat our ice cream and they had a parking lot which I appreciated since parking in Vancouver can be tough to find.

I spent the afternoon after dropping Gus off reading, knitting, listening to a podcast and having a nap.

Exercise:

This morning I got out for a 4.85km run. It wasn’t horrible, but wasn’t wonderful either. It did help to keep in mind what I heard on the MTA podcast yesterday- you can’t be trying to lose weight and get faster at the same time. My focus is definitely on losing weight right now, so I’ll ease up on myself about being faster.

This evening I did end up going to the trail run clinic, but I viewed it as a hike rather than a run. We went 400m straight up and then ran down. Unfortunately even the running down was a little dicey as the terrain was super unstable. I found myself more relaxed with not thinking of it as a run:). The view at the top was beautiful!

Well I’m going to go back to veging on the couch.

Trail Thursday

It was another lovely holiday day. I actually wonder if you can have a bad holiday day? I hope not!

Beauty:

For once I didn’t hop out of bed for a run, but instead lounged around and then went for a pedicure with Lyndsay. It was lovely, except for when they touch the bottom of my feet. Sometimes I hate the fact that I am super ticklish!

Baking:

I had plans for the evening so decided to get going on another recipe from the cookbook I’m working from this month.

Today I made the Cherry Pie Poppers. It’s a simple cherry pie filling with a sugar cookie pastry.

The only change I made to the pastry was to use an already made all purpose flour mixture instead of Sylvana’s. Next time I’ll have to allow time to make hers as I was surprised by the cookie-ness of the pastry as I was expecting more like a pie pastry. I had to push down each one with a shot glass when they came out of the oven as they had puffed up. The recipe made tons more pastry than was needed!

The pie filling was simple to make though I used the fresh option instead of frozen cherries. I was surprised by the addition of pumpkin pie spice, but it was an awesome addition and really made the sauce flavorful and not overly sweet.

This recipe was easy to make, didn’t take that long and turned out great, even though I let them get a little too brown.

Reading:

I finished Meet Cute by Helena Hunting today. I’ve been reading and nothing else!

Wow! This book sounds as though it’s going to be just a cute romance, but it is so much more. It deals with some big topics and emotions in a lovely way. The characters are interesting, dynamic and realistic. They make mistakes, are uncertain and learn along the way. The pacing is realistic and excellent. The book pulls you in and keeps you turning pages.

Eating:

I had yogurt for breakfast.

Food:

My friend Brenda has invited me over for dinner to try out the newest dish she had gotten from Fresh Prep. It was a tuna poke bowl, which anyone who knows me, knows I love seafood. I was super excited as she invited me to help her prep and cook it too. The package was super organized, though I do worry about how much plastic they use to bag up all their small amounts of ingredients. The dish said it took 25 minutes but with both of us working, it didn’t. The meal was super yummy and tasted like a restaurant meal. Brenda says all of the recipes have been like that. I may need to look into Fresh Prep for the Fall, though I think I would only need to order one meal for the whole week as the portions are very generous! We barely made a dent in the tuna poke bowl.

Exercise:

All day I hadn’t planned on going to the trail clinic tonight as the route sent to me earlier in the week really didn’t excite me, which explains my eating siracha sauce at 4:30pm (not a good idea before a run!).

However, after a nap, I decided to run down and join the clinic. I didn’t turn my running app on which did take some of the sting out of the fact that I ended up walking a lot of the start because we did about 250m of elevation all at one time! Ugh it was hot and hard! The run down was okay, but it was almost too steep to run down comfortably. What really impressed me tonight was that I had run down to the run and I actually ran home after the run! That was all on top of the 2km I did mid afternoon when I didn’t think I was going at all.

Blogging:

I really need to figure out this photo thing as there are so many more photos I’d like to share today! My tuna poke bowl, the trail, my new trail running shirt…

Thursday Trails

It was a busy day, but busy with fun stuff!

Exercise:

I knew I had trail clinic tonight so I started the day with just a walk. It was a nice way to get out and enjoy the clouds.

This evening we did a run to jug island. This is one of my favourite hikes, but I don’t think of it as a great run because you just end up having to hike a lot of it. There’s a lot of up and down hill that is super technical. We definitely weren’t going fast! In fact we were going so slow that Squad Runner didn’t even give me any points. Part of it is that the leader keeps stopping. It drives me crazy! I should have dug my phone out to pause it, I guess.

Shopping:

This morning I met up with the teacher who is next door to me at school and we went to Chapters to buy the Bookclub books for next year. It is amazing how quickly we can have a huge stack of books! We look for a variety of genres, nothing over 300 pages or $10 and make sure that the books are available at both of our local libraries. It was so much fun!

Reading:

I finished another book off my kindle app, called Getting Wrapped Up by Erin Nicholas. It is part of the series I have been reading, but I have to admit that this one is my least favourite. It had some weird parts and was definitely steamier than sweet.

Eating:

Yogurt and strawberries for breakfast

Avocado and lobster salad for lunch

Chicken and banana chips for snack

Fries for dinner

Knitting:

Between a late lunch with my friend and my next social engagement I managed to finish the front of my cardigan and start the first sleeve. I really need to look up how to do sleeves two at a time as I think it would be really nice to be done both at once!

I also had a lovely nap at this time:)

Socializing:

My friend Michelle is off to Amsterdam for the summer so I met up with her and another friend for Happy Hour. I was just drinking water as I knew I had a run, but was feeling uncomfortable when the waitress kept asking if we wanted anything. I ordered fries and knew it was a mistake!

My friend Katie did give me the good idea of dragging my mom to Leavenworth. I have been trying to figure out where to go for a short holiday and I have read about Leavenworth and had it been the setting in a book I’ve read and a movie I’ve seen. I’ll have to do some research.

Well I’m off to bed!

Friday Eve Thankfully!

I am tired!

Teaching:

The kids were great today. We wrote about our field trip yesterday and the kids wrote so much!!! It’s great to see how far they have come!

Most of the rest of the day was taken up with trying to finish our Canada Flag torn paper art and gluing everything into our scrapbook. I only have about five kids who have managed all of that so I know what we will be doing tomorrow afternoon.

My mom came up after work to deliver all my shoeboxes and we started on the big job of replacing them. We’ll finish tomorrow, though I feel like there’s some I need to go back to.

Exercise:

After a quick cup of tea with mom I was off to the trail running clinic. We were running in Bert Flynn Park which is my usual Saturday morning run. I thought I had a picture but I don’t have one of the single track technical trails we were doing tonight. It was awesome to start and end on new trails and to have some familiarity in the middle. I got 5.66km done so that helps out my yearly goal too!

I did notice my left knee doesn’t like the stabilizing it has to do during trail running:(

Shopping:

I have to admit I prioritized my trail running over baking something homemade for the staff party tomorrow night. I always love having the excuse to bake, but not when I’m getting home late. I’m sure they’ll like the four flavour cake I bought.

Well I need sleep as I have an early workout with L in the morning.

Merry Friday Eve

I really do love thinking about Thursdays this way:)

Teaching:

We had to be flexible as this morning I only had ten children for first block as so many were pulled out for different reasons. Then we had AbEd come in and do the legend of the butterfly with my students and do a butterfly craft with them.

We did our last day of shapes and it went quite well. The students mostly seem to know their shapes and what a vertex, face and edge are.

This afternoon we worked on our art project. I only have one child done after two sessions so I see lots of art in our future next week.

After school I had the last Bookclub of the year and then finished my report cards. Still lots of editing and tweaking to do, but at least I have something I could send home!

Exercise:

It was the first night of trail clinic. I wasn’t super excited as we were just doing Mundy Park, but it actually turned out awesome because we did a route I’ve never done before. We even got to run around a lake I didn’t know existed! I put my self in the slow, short group and I was at the front of the group easily, but am not sure about moving up as I’m assuming it’s just going to keep getting longer and harder…?????

This evening I’ve done a bit of a workout before bed. I did: 50 squats, 50 plié squats, 100 front kicks, 100 back kicks, 100 roundhouse kicks, 100 hamstring curls, 100 standing crunches, 100 jabs, 100 crosses, 100 uppercuts, 30 v ups.

A Visiting Weekend

Sorry for going off the grid. I made a lightning trip to visit my brother and his family for my niece’s 12th birthday.

Friday after school I picked up teaching resources my SIL had bought and then drive across the city to take the ferry over to the island. I got a lovely evening with the family and in the morning I took my niece shopping for her present. I have started doing a shopping trip with the kids so they will get what they want. I don’t want to be the aunt who gives gifts they laugh at. I love that at 12, my niece still chose to buy playmobile. I really liked the cupcake shop, but she went for the playground and a few figurines.

My niece did indulge me and check out a knitting store with me, but I was very good and bought nothing!

I got to enjoy the family birthday lunch and a look at the open house next door, and then headed up the island for a quick trip to see my parent’s new property and then took the ferry home. It was a very busy 24 hours!

Today:

Exercise:

Since I was going to be home after all, I arranged to run Crystal Falls with Dennis this morning. This is his favourite run, but even he admits it’s not as much fun now. It used to be a single track, technical trail with lots of obstacles, water features, mud, puddles and not well known. Now it has been pedestrianized. It was still nice and cool and fun, but it also doesn’t seem as long!

I also got in a short walk this afternoon to finish off my Squad Easy mission.

Shopping:

After a leisurely cup of tea, I did do my shopping. It really gets to me that two little bags of groceries cost me $50! I’m thinking I should try a few different grocery stores out and see if any are cheaper.

Cooking:

I did get a second batch of strawberry-rhubarb jam made today. I used a different recipe from Pinterest and am happier as it is not as sweet. However, to use this recipe, I feel like you need to know how to can.

I still have rhubarb left and so am thinking of trying rhubarb oat crisp ice cream as it is a flavour at a local gourmet ice cream shop. I’m going to have to do some research first though.

I also made a fruit salad for my breakfasts this week and am just thinking I should go cook up some different proteins to go in my salads this week.

Reading:

After a lovely nap, I finished up the book I had been reading on the ferries. Bride of New France tells the journey of Laure who comes from an orphanage in France to the new world. She is sent to marry and have children to strengthen France’s control in Canada. It was an interesting read and definitely drew me in, though I do wish it had ended happier. I suppose that just means it’s realistic🤣

Movie:

In order to get over the book, I have been watching Summer in the Vineyard while casting on my new cardigan. So far, it’s been cute, but it definitely won’t be a favourite as it relies on lack of communication for its drama and that is a pet peeve of mine!

Eating:

Amazingly, I was good on my trip and so have been trying to keep it going.

Breakfast- coconut chips on my way to the run

Lunch- shrimp ring

Snack- mini scone, grapes

Dinner- tilapia mixed with everything but the bagel seasoning and a little mayo spread on cucumber slices

Well I’d better go get that protein cooked.

Saturday

It was a great day, but I was absolutely exhausted and went right to sleep last night. Probably due to the fact that on the one day I could sleep in, I was wide awake at 6am☹️

Exercise:

I had already been to Costco and to my parents place to check their mail (my mom texted me to do this as I was on my way there- so crazy how similar we are!) when I met up with Sarah for a run. She was a great sport and indulged my wish to run up to a local waterfall. Thankfully it wasn’t quite as muddy as I was expecting!

5.6km done on a trail is a great way to start the weekend! I also managed to get 200 squats with a band done and 100 crunches- bicycles and normal, done.

Reading:

I spent quite a bit of time reading my newest NetGalley book- Lori Foster’s Slow Ride. So far, it’s a great read!

House:

In between chapters I made myself do two jobs around the house! I got vacuuming, dusting, sweeping, bathroom cleaned. It’s livable again🤣

Knitting:

I am back trying to finish up my sweater so I can start on projects for February’s classes in HPKCHC. I am on my second sleeve, but I think I’ll be playing yarn chicken to get it and the placket and hood done:(

Socializing/ Eating:

I got the chance to do a second Dine Out experience this year with my best running buddies. We went to Baci which is just a town over. It’s odd as everyone you talk to has seen this restaurant, but no one had been there. It was a great night. The ambience is great for a fancy dinner and the food was superb! I had a tomato and onion salad to start and then the seafood fettuccini, made to be gluten free and dairy free. I ended the night with a cup of tea as they didn’t have a dessert I could have. This was probably a good thing as I was stuffed!

Well I’m off to finish off my day:)

Sunshine and the Living is Good:)

It was a lovely day!

Friends:

So yesterday when we were working out Lyndsay’s babysitter had cancelled on her. I volunteered to be at her place for 6:30 this morning so she could go do her second job. It really wasn’t tough as Brady slept until 7am and then we played Go Pup (the paw patrol version of Go Fish). Her stepson showed up at 8am so I could leave instead of taking Brady to the gym. It wasn’t a bad way to start the day:). Had the company of Emmy the crazy cat!

Exercise:

I headed out to meet Sarah for a trail run. Of course, I forgot to wear my new trail shoes:(. We had a great double loop through Bert Flynn Park. A few weeks away and I had forgotten how hilly that park is!! Kyla did circles around us and still looked cute!

I followed this up with a quick run around the high school block to add a bit of time to get to fifty minutes of running this morning.

Beauty:

I admit to having a one hour nap when I got home to make up for the early morning. I then went and had a pedicure, brows and eyelashes done. It was lovely as I go to a friend for these so we got a visit in too. Glad my feet are no longer embarrassing!

Socializing:

This afternoon I headed downtown to meet up with a close friend for the afternoon. We headed to Granville Island for the Smashart festival. There were a ton of new murals

Plus a beer garden and food trucks! We didn’t partake as I already had plans for dinner, but I have to admit I was pretty excited to see Hello Sweets!

All of their ice cream is plant based and I could have had a cherry cola float!!! Alas, I was good…

We wandered around looking at stores. I really loved a lot of things that were in this store:

But they seriously need a sale section!! Everything was just so expensive! They had a neat book about the bad girls in history and another- a diary with a Jane Austen quote for each day. I also saw gorgeous thank you cards I wanted to get for my SIL because they said Merci and she is a French immersion teacher who is really good about sending thank you cards, but they were all way too expensive:(

We lined up for an Aquabus to take us over to the Main Street area to where we had dinner plans. There was great people watching from the lineup!

Eating:

When I had been talking to my co-teacher about how I was going downtown today, a parent had suggested a vegan restaurant to try- Virtuous Pie.

It was doable so Emily and I headed there for dinner. It was so good. I had no worries about my dairy allergy and everything could be made gluten free too so it was like Christmas. I got what the parent had recommended which was the Stranger Wings pizza and I had a cider along with it.

It was spicy buffalo cauliflower bites, crisp shallots, vegan blue cheese drizzle and shallots. It was amazing! I ate half and brought the other half home because I wanted to have some of their ice cream for dessert.

I had the peanut butter cookie dough ice cream and it was so yummy and delicious! If we hadn’t been walking, I would have bought a pint!

Overall it was an absolutely awesome day and now I’m going to finish it with some knitting and a Hallmark movie:)

A Great Day:)

Today started off great! I laid in bed with my breakfast and watched a hallmark movie and I weighed in at 98.2, definitely a step in the right direction!

It continued to be great with a run around Sasamat Lake with an old running buddy who has just moved back into the area after a year. This lake run is not super long, just a half hour if you take your time and it is interesting with some ups and downs and some technical details. I wasn’t expecting to, but we ran the whole thing:) The hill at the end is just enough to make you feel like you really worked.

I then got a tour of my running buddy’s new townhouse and we took her dog for a walk and got coffee.

I had been wanting to try this new coffee place, The Beanery on Panorama Drive in Port Moody. I always thought a coffee shop was needed in the area so was super happy when I saw one go in. I hate to say it, but my iced chai latte with soy milk wasn’t very good:( First, it was slightly warm so nothing iced about it, and secondly it tasted powdery. I’m hoping that the place will improve with age. The breakfast pizzas definitely sounded good! There was also no gluten free options:(

A quick stop at home and then I picked up my Cookie Lady friend for a shopping trip to Park Royal Shopping Centre in West Vancouver. This has been my favourite shopping centre for a while because it has Ivivva ( kids lululemon), J Crew,  and The Shoe  Company which has a great selection of kids shoes. Today a few things annoyed me though:( Ivivva is closing their store and will only be available on West 4th in Vancouver or online. I’m an adult shopping in a kids store so obviously I’m not typical; how do they expect me to shop online without being able to try things on???? I think they’ve lost me as a customer:( Secondly, I’ve always liked J Crew as their clothes fit my style, but it drives me nuts that they advertise a teacher discount and then every time they find a reason not to honour it:(  Not at this location, not on that item, not when we have this promotion, etc. The khaki pants I bought for work that don’t have to be shortened are great, but they would have been better if I had gotten my teacher discount!Finally the hour and forty five minute drive home ( when it only took thirty to get there) did me in.  I have no idea how people drive in that every day! It was fun, but I think next time I’d rather drive to the airport!

I managed to get my three exercise times in, but it was doubtful for a while. My run this morning, a quick 15/12/10 workout and then a walk around the inlet trail this evening. At least something got done and hopefully it was enough to keep the scale number going down and the muscle building up!

I didn’t get much done on my list today, but I don’t really think it’s my fault as my phone turned off around 2:30 and then only turned back on around 6:45. I’m wondering if this is because my memory is so low. I wish I knew more about iPhones, maybe I wouldn’t find it so frustrating then!

Well it was a busy but fun day with the good outweighing the bad, so a success!
