Moving Monday

It doesn’t look like we’re having Workout Wednesday this year so now we have Moving Monday:)

Exercise:

I started the day with a run, but had to content myself with the sidewalk. I could have come home on the trail, but was worried about making sure I got all my mileage in. I did manage to get 3.32km in which is fine with me:) I was faster than normal which really surprised me because it sure didn’t feel like it!

This afternoon after school we had our first bootcamp. I really tried to push myself because I’ve been feeling flabby and frumpy lately. We did: plank, mountain climbers, squat jacks, pushups to shoulder taps, front kicks, squat to shoulder press, reverse curls, front punches, bench step ups to burpees, single leg bench lunges, side lunges with hammer curls, bridge March, side wall balls. It felt great to be sweaty!

I just feel like I need to have a couple of days in a row of healthiness to get on a roll. I’m not gaining weight, but I’m not losing like I want to be:(

Teaching:

Monday is always tough as I feel like I have to retrain my students after the weekend.

The day didn’t start great as I had to encourage a mom to give her kid a hug and let her be independent. This of course, was the one who was standing waiting to be dressed last week!😖

We finally got our All About Me page done and put up, only a week late! I had some children using privacy screens so they could get their work done.

We started talking about bucket filling (being kind) and designed our own buckets. Of course right after that I had three boys go outside and have a huge fight on the playground🙄. I’m glad this stuff isn’t happening in the classroom, but I finally made it clear that they wouldn’t be going outside if they can’t handle it. I’m really not sure how much the office follows through with consequences. I was also thinking on the way home that maybe we need to put the boys in separate areas on the playground for now until they earn the privilege of playing together.

Finally this afternoon after planners and silent reading (the stamina didn’t increase today☹️), I introduced the class jobs and allowed them to pick their jobs. I’m thinking I need to keep better track of which jobs they do this year and how well they do them so it can be part of a report card comment.

That was my day and I was exhausted by the time I got home!

Eating:

I had a half a turkey and guacamole sandwich for breakfast, a breakfast taco and fruit for recess, a plum mixed with yogurt and cereal parfait for lunch and a feed of beet greens and two rice cakes with cream cheese and jam for lunch. Way too much food!!!!

Knitting:

I have finished two cowls that are the same pattern and yarn for my HPKCHC class this month. I’m glad their done and it was perfect timing as the designer got back to me with the stitch confirmation.

Well, I guess I’d better go to bed so I can get up and do it all again tomorrow.

Have fun!

2 Down, 38 To Go

It’s so hard to believe that another whole week is gone! It wasn’t my typical day today.

Exercise:

I got up early for a workout with L. We did sprint intervals and I got to add 4.22km to my yearly mileage. These sprint intervals felt way easier than the hills last week! We then did 3 sets of squats with a shoulder press, hamstring curls, sit ups, calf raises, skipping and burpees. It felt great to get a workout done, but I was dripping sweat!

Good thing I got up early for that because I have done nothing else active today.

Blog Hop:

Since I didn’t teach today and can’t go a day without talking about school, I will do another day of Teacher Turned Mommy’s awesome back to school blog Hop.

A new box of crayons are so exciting to me! I actually like getting any new supplies like this. First of all, I try to keep them in their original order for as long as possible (yes I am one of those types🤣). I love when crayons are brand new because they are sharp, as soon as they have lost their sharp point, I don’t seem to love them as much.

I remember as a kid there was only one box of Crayola 8 crayons available, now there seem to be as many different crayon options out there as there are objects to draw. I haven’t had one of the bigger boxes so I’m not sure, but I think they might just overwhelm me with the choice🤣

The other thing I love about a new box of crayons are the names of the colors. I always inspect the names and find it very interesting which ones are chosen. I don’t know what happened to just red, green, blue, purple, grey, black, yellow, and white. Now I regularly have children asking to borrow sienna, mulberry, and sunflower!

Medical:

After loading the dishwasher, taking out the garbage and having my first nap of the day, I went off to start my holter test. If you’re unaware this is where they put five sensors at certain areas of your chest and you wear a heart monitor for twenty four hours. The worst part is the netting they put over top to keep everything in place. You can’t change, shower or get wet for those twenty four hours:(. I am super itchy and some of the sensors burn, but I was told that was normal when you have sensitive skin. The whole thing doesn’t hurt, but I’m super aware of it. I just can’t wait for it to be over at this point!

Knitting:

I have to write down absolutely every time I get up so after a couple of errands to get gas, etc I have mainly been sitting on the couch. I had a second nap of the day and now I have gotten to row 70 of 80 of the body decreases and am waiting to hear from the designer if I can skip the last ten rows and start the increases. I’m not sure if this is allowed in a test knit, but I’m short and I don’t think I need another ten rows of decreasing:(. We shall see what she says.

While I am waiting for an answer, I did something I never do, and casted on another project. This is going to be a fall coloured cowl that will hopefully fulfill my HPKCHC September class requirement. Hopefully it will also get another three skeins out of the stash.

Well I’m on my fourth Hallmark movie of the day and will get back to the cowl.

Have fun!

The First Day

I realize school started a week ago, but today was my first day with my class for the year. I was super nervous about it.

Exercise:

I got out this morning for my morning run and managed to be out the door at 6:30 so I’m happy with that as I didn’t want to have to get up any earlier! I got 3.47km in. I really want to make sure that on non-work days I get more mileage in so my body doesn’t get used to only doing 3km. At least this 3km ensures I am still on track this week:)

This evening I got a little bit of weight work done, 3 sets of 12 of the following:

Bicep curls, squats, front raises, calf raises, tricep kickbacks, bridge, shoulder press, deadlifts, sit ups, and Russian twists.

Teaching:

It was a truly exhausting day because I had to teach absolutely everything! We came in and sat down and I taught how to use the coatroom. We did a talking circle and everyone introduced themselves. 8/21 children challenged themselves to come up with something they liked that starts with the same letter as their name. Not bad for a straight grade one. I taught the bathroom routine, the recess routine, we read a story called First Day Jitters which I always love. We also read No David and brainstormed our rules. I always post the rules and have the children sign them and I had one little girl who didn’t plan on signing them because she didn’t plan on following them. Can you guess that this was the same girl who drove me nuts all day with her attitude and learned helplessness!!!

The children finally went home and I got to sit through a very painful staff meeting where nothing seemed to be decided and then did some more prep for tomorrow. I got home extremely late:(

Knitting:

I got a few rows done on my sweater:)

Eating:

A hard boiled egg, a mini kind bar, salad with chorizo sausage, grapes, cherry tomatoes and crackers.

Well I’m off to bed!

Have fun!

1 Down, 39 to Go

Lol not that I’m wishing life away, but this week was tough!

Exercise:

This morning was a workout with L and it felt great to get back at it. We did a half hour of hills on the treadmill and I finally thought of adding that to my running mileage. I don’t know why I hadn’t thought to do that before!!! We then did squats, squat walks, crunches, plank toe taps, goblet squats with two minutes of cardio between each routine.

On the walk home I decided that I think I’m going to use my Saturday runs to catch up on any mileage I’ve missed during the week. This way I don’t need to worry about it during the week and yet I can get caught up each week. Again, why didn’t I think of this before?

Teaching:

We got our class lists today. Everyone looks at me and just shakes their heads, though all but one of the classes is like this is in my school. I really dislike when I get punished for being able to do my job!

This year I would like to keep track of what I do in my classroom that works well, in case any teachers follow me and are interested. These are the activities that the kids were really engaged in:

We had last year’s class so had to find engaging activities that their new teachers wouldn’t want to do. We did a nature hunt where they had to record one item that started with each letter of the alphabet. For example a leaf for L.

We had a September survey where they had to go around and ask their classmates questions to find one person who had done each item in the boxes on the page. Hey could only ask one question of each person and then had to go away and ask someone else. They spent almost an hour doing this and were upset when recess interrupted it.

We read the story Carumba which was great about how everyone is good at something.

We also wrote a top five list of what we’re excited about this year.

As far as my goals go- I got two files organized this week, and finished the work week 0.2lbs lighter- not bad for a stressful week. I’m not sure if I talked less and listened more, but I did refrain from signing up for a ton of extra curricular activities.🤷🏼‍♀️

Blog Hop:

My grade 4,6 and 7 teacher made a definite difference in my life. In grade two I hanged schools and it wasn’t a particularly welcoming group of children I came into, in fact they were pretty horrible. My teacher made a quick appearance as a TOC this year and then came back as my teacher for three other years. It was great as he showed interest in who I was and made me feel like someone cared and thought it was okay that I was who I was. He definitely encouraged me in all of my pursuits and crazy ideas. He is also definitely the reason I became a teacher!

Thanks to Teacher Turned Mommy for hosting this blog hop and be sure to check out hers and others posts on Back to School.

Socializing:

After watching several parents freak out about their child’s class placement a few of us teachers escaped to the local pub for some snacks and a glass of sangria. It was lovely to get away! I am lucky to have a great set of friends I work with who keep me sane!

Knitting:

I divided for my sleeves on the Not a Boring Sweater and had to send a picture in as it is a test knit. I am really liking it so far!

Eating:

Well I have to say I’ve been happy with myself for resisting all the treats at work this week. Today I had a rice cake with Pb & j. A Pb & j granola bar, yogurt, the rest of my steelhead romesco, my share of some appetizers, and a scoop of ice cream ( I walked over to Vashti Rose with Brady and Lyndsay).

Well I’m going back to my knitting.

Have fun!

Calm Before the Storm

I decided I’d better try to have some quiet days as it is getting very close to when I’ll have no chance of that!

Exercise:

After enjoying a cup of tea in bed, I headed out for my run. I got about 4.5km in when the rain started pelting down. All I could do was tuck my phone in my sleeve and head for home as fast as I could. I finished 5.3km and the last kilometer was my fastest by far! I guess it’s time to put my phone in a bag on my runs again.

This evening I finally got back to my weight training as well. I did 3 sets of 12 of the following:

Calf raises, hamstring curls, reverse lunges, squats, deadlift, bridge, sit up, dead bug, chest press, flies, bent over rows, bicep curls, overhead tricep extension, front raise, and shoulder press.

It’s good to finally get back to it and now I just have to make it a habit!

Knitting:

I have spent most of the day in absolute silence working on my knitting. I am loving how the Not a Boring Sweater looks already, but it sure does take concentration and counting.

I am twenty rows into that yoke full of cabling. I think I’ll be thankful for the mindless stockinette when I get there! I am a little worried the sweater is going to be too big for me:(

Eating:

Not a bad day:

Banana with peanut butter and jam

Salmon burger

Blackberries

Carrot, celery, cucumber slices with guacamole and two ham sticks ( no idea, but I found them in my freezer).

Well I’m going to take a break and read or watch a chick flick.

Have fun!

Trivia Tuesday #17

It was a quiet morning, but that was quite lovely.

Exercise:

I didn’t really want to go running and didn’t feel like it was going great when I was out there, but I did get 3.5km in at a decent speed, so we’ll call that a success.

I also did a quick workout I found on Instagram in the late morning. 30 sumo squats, 30 walking lunges, 80 high knees, 30 bridges, 40 curtsy lunges and 40 jumping jacks. I probably should have done it at least 1-2 more times, but I didn’t.

Knitting:

I spent some time knitting in circles and am in the hip area of my sweater so will hopefully be done soon!

Podcast:

As I was knitting I listened to a couple of episodes of Marathon Training Academy and once again quite enjoyed it. Does anyone know of a good knitting podcast?

Car:

I had car trouble on my way home from my trip so went by the mechanic today to find out what was wrong. It’s unfortunately the knock sensor which means the car won’t quit on me but will drive horribly and cost a lot to fix because the engine has to be pulled to get at it:(😖😖😖

Trivia:

After a lovely massage I took myself off to trivia. It was a fun group of five tonight. What I knew:

Who sang I Don’t Dance?

Lee Brice

What is the first name of Nobel?

Alfred

Who is the richest man in the world?

Mark Bezoz

What number did Pavel Bute wear other than 10?

Genghis Khan, Ivan the Terrible, Hirohito

What money is used in Mexico?

Which country foes Sergio Garcia come from?

Spain

Well I’m going to go read my new book!

Friday Fun Day

It was nice to wake up with actual plans today.

Exercise:

I got out for a short run this morning-3.25km. It wasn’t a great run but I can’t put my finger on why. I think I’m going to blame it on my being tired from the trail run last night. The good news is that I only have 6.7km to go until I am completely caught up on my yearly mileage goal. I should have that done this weekend:)

I did get a workout in this afternoon. I did 45 seconds of each of the following:

right leg bench squat,

side shuffle x2,

left leg bench squat,

right wood chop,

weighted cross country skier x2,

left wood chop,

weighted jog x2,

left knee pull,

right knee pull,

squat with left shoulder press, dumbbell row to deadlift x2,

squat with right shoulder press,

frog crunches x2,

left oblique crunches,

right oblique crunches,

left lunges, right lunges, squat with alternating leg lift x2,

left fire hydrant,

right fire hydrant,

left leg lift,

right leg lift

I also got a walk in this evening because it was such a nice night:)

Socializing:

I had arranged to meet up with one of my work friends to go explore Fort Langley. It was a lovely day. We started with lunch at Wendell’s Books and Cafe. I had the roasted turkey sandwich on gluten free bread. They messed up the dressing for the salad, but quickly and efficiently fixed the problem:). The bread wasn’t great as the crusts were falling off, but the filling of turkey and cranberry was great! This would be a great stop if you’re looking for gluten free in the area.

We then proceeded to look in every single store. It was neat to just wander and take our time. There is a good mix of clothing, new home and self care stores and vintage and antique shops. It was a relaxed day in a beautiful location.

I love all the old houses in this area. The one above is called The Little White House and it serves high tea and has lots of cute clothing and jewelry. I checked and they don’t do a tea that is both gluten free and dairy free:(

Eating:

Besides the yummy turkey and cranberry sandwich and side greens I had for lunch.

I had a rice cake with peanut butter and jam for breakfast

I had a pepper with hummus, cucumber with cheese, grape tomatoes and blueberries for dinner ( I love a charcuterie meal!)

Knitting:

I have been knitting like crazy, but the blanket doesn’t seem bigger. I did count though and it is 48 squares wide by 37 squares right now. I guess I’ll concentrate just on getting to 48 by 48!

That’s it for me!

Have fun!

Workout Wednesday Prevailed

I really didn’t plan on a lot of activity today, but it happened anyway.

Eating:

I was still so full from pub food from last night that I haven’t been very hungry today. I’ve had: shrimp plate (boy do I love the Costco shrimp plate), Greek salad, 6 crackers and cheese.

Reading:

I finished the second book in Alexa Martin’s Playbook series, called Fumbled. I think I liked this book even more than the first (which is saying a lot) because the drama was dialed back a bit and it had a deeper issue in it. It’s still another awesome beach read and I can’t imagine that I have to wait for December for the third book!!!

Knitting:

I am knitting away on the blanket, but the ball of yarn isn’t getting smaller and the blanket doesn’t seem to be getting bigger. I have promised myself that I will use the whole ball of yarn so I don’t have to add it to my stash count, but I think this may turn into a full size afghan. I really wish I was knitting a sweater right now!

Socializing:

I met up with my friend Anna and her two sons today. I always love spending time with them as the boys are adorable and so well behaved. Anna really is amazing with them. We walked over to the playground (getting a tea on the way) and just hung out and played with the boys. It was such a lovely afternoon!!!

Sammy insisted on wearing his “helmet” as Ruben had to wear his because he was on his bike.

Exercise:

I really planned on just my one run this morning. I went out and around the park this morning. Of course it managed to pour rain on me for about ten minutes in the middle of it. I definitely saw that reflected in my pace as I slowed to try and figure out how to protect my phone:( The run really was fine though and I felt strong. I did 4.52km at a 6:45 average. I know that’s not fast for most people, but it’s decent for me.

This afternoon my friend Sarah texted me to see if I wanted to run Bert Flynn with her. I’m not one to ever turn down a run, so of course I said yes. We did about 4km around the trails in there and it was lovely and cool as the day had heated up. When I run with Sarah, I keep in mind that I have a mileage goal this year, not a pace goal. I just slow down and enjoy the scenery and the company as it isn’t often I have company!

I haven’t decided what to do about my trail run tomorrow night. I’m not super excited about going for a few reasons. Now that Dennis has broken his foot, I really won’t know anyone, they are obsessed with elevation and that’s not what I was looking for, my knees hurt from all the up and down:(. I’ve paid for it though and know it’s good for me and it would get me out of my comfort zone. Ugh why do pros and cons have to be even?!?!

As I was knitting away this evening I was listening to another episode of the Marathon Training Academy podcast. It was about weight loss for marathoners. It was great to listen to this, even though I’m not a marathoner, because my goal this summer has been to get back to my favourite weight/shape where I feel amazing. I was reminded of a lot of good things by this podcast and recommend it for anyone who needs some tips or reminders. They also set out an easy weights workout that I was inspired to do this evening.

I did 3 sets of 15 reps or 30 seconds of the following:

Forward lunges

Squats (while getting my butt as far down towards the ground as possible)

Calf raises

Plank

Side plank

Superman

Bridge

I did each of these slower than usual so I could really ensure proper form. It was a nice, quick workout and only took 22 minutes, but at least it was something!

Well I’m going to go watch a movie and knit again.

Have fun!

AJ

Trivia Tuesday #15

It was an unplanned day that turned out to have fun in it.

Exercise:

My run this morning was a struggle. I had decided to try walking over to Murray Street before starting to see if that helped my pace, but I don’t know if it helped, hurt or just messed with me mentally. I definitely didn’t like that I only clocked 4.2km, rather than the 5.1km I should have gotten! I think I’ll go back to just starting slow as I go across the street.

I also got a workout in this afternoon. It was a countdown workout.

50 jacks, 50 crunches

45 jacks, 45 squats

40 jacks, 40 lunges

35 jacks, 35 pushups

30 jacks, 30 high knees

25 jacks, 25 crunches

20 jacks, 20 squats

15 jacks, 15 lunges

10 jacks, 10 pushups

5 jacks, 5 burpees

I was definitely a hot, sweaty mess by the end. I’m really thinking I want to find a good weights workout though.

Shopping:

This past week when it was pouring, I found out that my Helly Hanson rain jacket had torn along the seam on the inside. I know I’m not tough on my clothing, so this morning I drove it back to the HH store where I bought it. They have sent it in to be repaired and it will be delivered to my home so I don’t have to make the 45 minute drive again. Yay!

Knitting:

I have gotten another three pattern repeats done on the blanket today. I really wish I hadn’t casted on so many stitches so it would go faster!!!

Family:

My nephew texted today to see if we could go for ice cream. I’m always happy to spend any time I can with that kid, so off I went. He actually bought me the ice cream this time. He’s growing up so much!! He also kept me company at Costco and helped me carry stuff. Of course it cost me a slice of Costco pizza, but it was a price I was happy to pay for spending time with him!

Reading:

I finished Intercepted by Alexa Martin today. It was so good! I was captured from the first page! The characters were interesting, the plot had a good pace, and the drama was appropriate for the professional sports world. I would recommend this as another good beach read! I also immediately started on the next book in the series, Fumbled.

Eating:

Rice cake with peanut butter and jam

Greek salad

Ice cream

salmon bowl over greens and some nachos (I’m way too full!)

Trivia:

Tonight trivia was a theme night about The Office. It was just my co-teacher Liane, her husband Eli and myself. I know absolutely nothing about this show, but managed to get two questions right.

In which state does The Office take place?

Pennsylvania

Who did they initially want to play the character that Rainn Wilson plays?

Seth Rogen

I have no idea how I knew those two things, but I did. Thankfully Liane had amazing knowledge and we sat at 4th for a while:)

I contributed my neat printing and Eli contributed knowledge of the show and the idea that I should go on a date between each Hallmark movie I watch🤣🤣🤣

Well, I’m back to reading.

Have fun!

AJ

Jam and a Great Book

I’d love to say I was as productive as yesterday, but it just wouldn’t be true. I’m blaming it all on the book!

Exercise:

It’s hopefully the last week that my morning run turned into a walk as I didn’t want to leave Brenda alone. We did the entire Coquitlam River so it was a good way to start the day, especially as Brenda walks very briskly.

I worked out this evening with another Lyndsay routine. After a warm up of running, skaters, jacks, side shuffle and skipping that wore me out, I did:

2 sets of: dumbbell press with squat hops, side lunges, plank taps to burpees, lunges to deadlift, bench push-up to leg raise, plank with leg raise up and to the side, squat jumps to pulsing squats, single leg hip lifts.

Then 2 minutes- first one skipping and the second jumping jacks.

Then 1 minute of each of the following: bench tricep press, wall sit, mountain climbers, band pull downs, and dumbbell swings.

Finally the torture ended with abs, 30 seconds each of: bicycles, Russian twists, right side crunch, left side crunch, full sit up

After that I ended the evening with a short run. I really didn’t want to go and had given myself permission to only go to the park and back, but surprisingly I felt really good. I still only did 3.75km🤣

Shopping:

After my walk and tea this morning I stopped by the farmer’s market and picked up my Black Sheep Vegan Cheese. I was so excited that they were close to home! I have to admit I bought one of each kind they have, though I was disappointed they were out of camemvert.

That’s my very large brown paper bag of cheese in the centre:)

I also went and picked up my friend Kathryn and we hit the Gourmet Warehouse. This is always a scary stop for me and I definitely require supervision. I really wanted to get an angel food cake pan, but they were sold out of it. I wanted to get wonton wrappers, but they only had rice paper. I also wanted to pick up canning jar lids, but they didn’t have the kind I need. I ended up being very good and only buying some sugar free vanilla syrup (I am on holidays so my tea should be special) and some butcher block oil for my charcuterie board. I was tempted by the Le Creuset and the cookbooks though!

Kitchen:

I got another batch of raspberry jam made today. It went smoother than yesterday. I think I need to make one more batch to get me through the year. After that I will just freeze the rest of the berries. I have to stop tomorrow and get more jars though.

Reading:

I spent a lot of today reading, I Flipping Love You by Helena Hunting. From the first page this book grabbed me and it never let go! It was such a good read. The plot is very fast paced and yet it seems to suit the characters.

The characters are realistic and interesting and the banter between them is great! I laughed out loud a few times and I have to admit I always love it when the female lead isn’t a pushover.

There was enough background given to have scenes and dialogue make sense and yet we weren’t inundated with “head stuff” or character’s thoughts.

I also liked how the narrative switched between the two main characters so you got to know both sides of the story.

This is an excellent beach read and is highly recommend it if you want something fun.

Eating:

What have I eaten today???

Breakfast- piece of toast with peanut butter and homemade raspberry jam

10 slices cucumber with cheese and 11 cherries.

Green beans with everything but the bagel seasoning on them

1 mini cherry tart

Raspberries as I was cutting them up for the jam

Not the best, but not horrible. At least my fridge is starting to empty out. I like it a lot better when there’s minimal food in there!

Well I don’t know if I’m going to start another book or some knitting, but I’m off.

Have fun!
