Amazingly I survived!

Teaching:

It was a pretty good day. We had writer’s workshop and built our love list which is simply a bank of writing ideas each kid does.

We tackled two math drills and finished our writing about Rocks and Rings. It was like pulling teeth to get any writing about this from the kids!

This afternoon we brainstormed places in our community and played outside since it was sunny.

Not bad and I didn’t have to raise my voice:). You could definitely tell the children had had four days off though!

Knitting:

I was desperately trying to get my toque done before trivia, but had to leave with three rows to go. I want to do this pattern again and put a band on it. That will be next.

My latest sweater- Date Night – a free pattern from Knitty. It turned out to be super easy though it took me enough tries to get it done. I ended up with less than a yarn of yarn leftover!

Oh and here’s the toque- Irish Hiking Beanie by Knit2Purl2 – a free pattern on Ravelry. I love the pattern and it was a quick knit. I want to do another and have a different ribbed band.

Bonus Days

It was so lovely on Saturday, after having two days off, to think of the fact that I had another two days off still to go! I ❤️❤️ this four day weekend!

Exercise:

Yesterday morning I ran Colony Farm with Dennis. I just couldn’t keep up with him. I haven’t had a 7:05km in a long time, but that was my first one. Thankfully I got faster from there, but I was definitely not a speed machine yesterday. We ended up with 5.15km as the path is still blocked, but it was at least something.

Last night I did a Hallmark workout which was a minute of jogging in between: squats, dips, Bridges, upright rows, bent over rows, front raises, lateral raises, crunches, reverse crunches, pushups, pullovers, plank, mountain climbers, bicep curls, reverse lunges, and plié squats.

I need to read up on heart rate zone training as I never know if being in zone 5 is a good thing or not.

This morning I headed out to a local lake for a run with my friend Sarah. I knew it would be a run/walk as part of the lake trail is very rugged so I put my watch on for a walk so I wouldn’t worry about our pace. We did it in less time it takes to walk the lake, so I’ll take it as a success. My watch was definitely acting weird though as it’s tough to get a signal out there. We did the access road on the second side as we figured the path would be super busy by that time as it was such a nice morning. I actually liked the road as we could more easily run.

Cooking / Baking:

Yesterday I made Rockfish Laksa in 38 minutes and today I made Roast beef with winter vegetables and a cherry demi glacé in 35 minutes. Both were very yummy and I got 5 servings out of each which makes me happy as it brings the cost down to about $5 per meal. I do like fresh prep for the fact that I get to cook as I like to cook and it is definitely quicker as you don’t have to chop everything and you don’t have to measure. I think the lack of measuring really speeds things up. Here are my meals:

I also got baking and made the lemon vegan cake (cupcakes) from Nora Cooks. The cupcakes were again easy to make, but I have to admit the batter looked weird to me and the cupcakes are chewier than I expected. I couldn’t resist putting cream cheese frosting on them, even though it is way too soft, just as Nora said. Oh well, it tastes yummy!

Knitting:

I have spent a great part of the last two days knitting ( probably when I should have been cleaning).🤣. I have finished the Date Night sweater and it is blocking on my floor right now. This sweater looked tiny when I finished it, but the pattern says it will block much bigger. I sure hope it does as otherwise, some kindergartener is getting a new sweater!

I have since started another toque. I had a random ball of turquoise yarn under my table that kept falling out and driving me crazy so I decided it needed to be used next but was having trouble figuring out what to make. I have decided on a toque and have to say that so far I am loving it! The only thing I may not love is that there is no defined ribbed band. I’ll have to see if that bothers me when I’m done.

Well I need sleep as tomorrow is going to come as a shock!

Wow Energy & Cupcakes

About halfway through the day I realized how much I had done and love how much energy I have now:)

Exercise:

After a bad nights sleep I got a text from Dennis canceling our morning run cause he also had a bad sleep. I had not ran on Thursday and Friday though so I felt like I really needed to go out. It was a wet and cold morning so I only got 5km done. I did however wear one of my new pairs of ASICS running shoes that I bought yesterday. I was really surprised that I could get these, but boy did they feel good. The spot on the bottom of my foot didn’t hurt at all!🎊🎉 I got faster as I went so I’ll count the run as a success.

This evening I did a workout as I am really trying to keep my runs and workouts even! I didn’t have time to watch a Hallmark movie first, so I had to come up with a plan on my own. I ended up doing a minute of jogging between each of the following and used 8lb weights.

31 squats, 39 plié squats, 20 banded side shuffles, 30 banded adductors, 30 calf raises, 37 bridges, 35 crunches, 50 bicycle crunches, 41 reverse crunches, 1 minute plank, 13 bicep curls, 35 bent over rows, 26 pullovers, 15 front raises, 15 side raises, 25 shoulder presses, 30 supermen

I’ve been finding it pretty easy to get myself to work out with the thought of it improving my running:). I am however trying to do longer workouts so that the timing of my runs and workouts become more even. We’ll see how that goes though.

Baking:

After coming in from my run, I was cold, even after a shower, so I started baking cupcakes so that I could turn on the oven. Gina, a parent at my school, fellow runner and maybe friend, had dropped off two cupcakes for me on Thursday for Valentines Day. I am not a huge chocolate fan, but when I tried one, even I had to admit, it was amazing! I immediately asked for the recipe and she pointed me to Nora Cooks. I decided to give it a try and found it very easy and quick to put together. I made cupcakes too and they only took 25 minutes to cook. They turned out great and I made the icing later in the day and now have tons in the fridge! The real test was that I took some to my dad (who refuses to eat anything that is gluten free and dairy free) and he raves about them and ate two very quickly! My mom and I agree that these cupcakes would be a great entertaining recipe.

Out:

My mom and I visited my aunt who just had a knee replacement and she is doing awesome. We then went for lunch at the Gilnetter. My mom and I were supposed to be sharing the seafood sandwich and fries but I ended up eating the whole sandwich while mom ate the fries as they may not have been safe for me.

We stopped at Home Depot and got keys cut and then headed home. Wasn’t a super productive day, but I still loved having my mom’s company!

Knitting:

I sat down again tonight to knit on the Date Night sweater and it is actually going well. I so want to stay up knitting, but I have an early run tomorrow, so I need to go to bed!

A Productive Wednesday

I was happy to finish a project.

Teaching:

We had a pretty productive day! This morning we did calendar and the children went off to music. I was a little ticked that student services came in with the OT and took over my classroom for my entire prep!!😖😖. After recess we tackled our polar bear research and managed to finish the writing of the facts. In the afternoon, about half the class finished their pictures, but the rest will have to finish up tomorrow.

We also finished three math drills and our valentine bags. The afternoon was quite peaceful which was a nice change.

We have been using the Go Noodle website a lot these past couple of weeks, but today I tried a new YouTube video from Cosmic Yoga. I did the Winter Wonderland which was a five minute routine and I loved it because it did yoga moves but was also quite the workout as the moves didn’t last long. I will definitely be trying more of these videos!

Exercise:

I hung around after school to speak with a parent and get some things done, but unfortunately with every minute I stayed at school I felt less like going for a run or working out. Thankfully I got over this and got a quick run to the park in before dark. I figure 2.78km is better than no kilometers:)

I also did my first non-Christmas hallmark movie workout today. I didn’t get a ton of reps so I went with two exercises for each event. This led me to do:

Squats and plié squats

Pullovers and bicep curls

Crunches and reverse crunches

Bridges and plank

Burpees and Around the world lunges

Front, side and diagonal raises

Froggers and high knees

Pushups and dips

Side shuffle and standing adductors

Wood chops and rows

I did a minute of jogging between each.

I realized I always concentrate on getting my heart rate up, but I’m starting to realize that this shouldn’t be my focus when I’m doing weights. I’ll get better about this:)

Knitting:

I finished the slouchy toque for my secretary’s daughter. I did it in a seed stitch pattern and am hopeful this one will work better!

Monday Mayhem

Sorry for no post yesterday. It was an interesting day. Met up with some old running buddies for a walk and then was supposed to go for breakfast. We waited for an hour at our favourite restaurant, but ended up walking across to Tim Hortons where I got to watch everyone else eat as there was nothing I could eat:(. I then came home and read like crazy to finish Circe by Madeline Miller for Bookclub. I finished it at 3:40 and Bookclub starts at 4🤣. Bookclub was great as we watched the Oscars, though I have to admit that I was disappointed that Parasite won for best picture. I really didn’t like that movie!

On to today…

Exercise:

I was crazy enough to get up early for a workout with L. It’s always tough to get up, but I feel so great afterwards. There was already someone on the treadmill so we did our floor work first and it was all about the bosu. It’s amazing how much intensity it adds to not be stable. We did raises, hip dip planks, sit ups, Superman’s and lunges on it and boy was it tough!

We then did a run on the treadmill that had me going up to 9% incline. I really don’t like hills! It felt good to get it done though!

Teaching:

It was a crazy day. It started with a bobcat sighting on the grounds so they brought all the children and parents into the gym early. All ya teachers wondered why as what bobcat is going to be crazy enough to come near 223 screaming children????

We tried to get all our morning jobs done, but the announcements were early as was the fire drill they threw in for fun. There went my plan:(. Oh of course in the middle of this we were short two EAs so my EA wasn’t always with my low functioning autistic boy which meant I had him and twenty one other children all on my own☹️

Oh and we were also celebrating 100 day so this morning we took a few moments to arrange our collections of 100 objects a few different ways and then after recess we made a class book and then traded classes with the kindergarten teachers and made the books with those classes too. It was a great idea as we got to see what’s coming up next year.

This afternoon we continued the pandemonium by starting a polar bear research project with the children. At the end of the day, we celebrated surviving with 9 minutes of playtime outside.

Oh my…. I hope the week calms down!!!

Knitting:

I have been sitting here knitting on a seed stitch toque and I think I may just head off to bed!

Have We Turned a Corner?

I don’t want to jinx it but today was finally a better day at work.

Teaching:

I told my students as we went through the shape of our day that if I didn’t have to raise my voice- they would get an extra long centres time in the afternoon. I had one little boy who just couldn’t control himself (running and sliding across the room), but the rest did a great job!

We got through calendar, music, quiet time, math, silent reading, desk clean out and a read aloud.

It probably helped that there was a TOC in the building for our AbEd worker who came in and actually helped children during math. I always love having an extra set of hands!

Cooking:

I made my first Fresh Prep meal today- Shrimp Pad Thai. When I put the first pot of water on to boil I started my timer and it took 38 minutes to make the meal. It was quite easy and the recipe card was well laid out and clear. I did think there could have been a few more shrimp, but that’s probably me just being a seafood piglet. I also was lucky that all of the sauce ingredients were going into one bowl as I wasn’t able to definitively tell the difference between some of them. Some labeling would have been nice. One thing I really appreciated was that their picture of the meal looked like mine. It didn’t look incredibly styled where the shrimp are equally spaced across the plate and all going the same way. I liked how I knew I had done it right because it looked the same as the picture.

The end result was so yummy! I liked that the hot sauce was given separately, well marked and you could add however much you wanted. The portions were quite generous and I have split the meal, meant to feed two, into four portions for meals over the next couple of days.

I am hoping to make the other meal tomorrow so I will let you know how it goes, but as of now, I would definitely do this again.

Exercise:

I had watched a hallmark movie last night but hadn’t gotten around to the workout so I did it tonight. I decided to do a minute of skipping between exercises, but surprisingly my heart rate didn’t seem to go as high as it does when I jog between exercises. I had thought it would be way higher! Tonight I did:

Squats, around the world lunges, plié squats, crunches, burpees, bicep curls, dips, bicycle crunches, pushups, Bridges, froggers, reverse crunches and front and side raises.

Knitting:

I finished my market bag. I once again used Berrocco Indigo in black for the bag and I really like this yarn for market bags. It holds up well, and yet isn’t tough on the hands. I did the fantasy naturale market bag pattern, a free pattern off ravelry. It is an easy, well written pattern that generates a bag that I think looks like the ones you can buy in the stores. We’ll see if my friend Michelle is happy with it.

I have now started on a toque for my friend Sarah’s daughter. I hope it goes quickly so I can go back to the Date Night sweater.

Well, I have to go try and read about 530 pages of my book as Bookclub is on Sunday.

Muddling Through Monday

Our secretary was away at work today and it was crazy. It made me realize how happy I am not to be in the middle of that. I just stayed on my classroom with my kids.

Teaching:

We did a new polar bear poem, changed desks for the new month, had a math drill and did a webbed feet experiment. Oh and we played outside in the freezing cold sunshine this afternoon.

I had dressed for rain and then was on recess supervision in the snow, had track practice at lunch in the sunshine and then had to sit through a very long, useless staff meeting. I heard some of the teachers afterwards saying that I push for a decision. I just want a decision made and action taken because if we “think about it”, it gets forgotten and then we end up not being able to get what we wanted. It makes sense to me, but maybe I should just not talk.

Exercise:

I have learned that a run is a really good idea after a staff meeting. I headed out and got 3.25km in before it got dark. I am loving having it light a little bit later. I also noticed that my Achilles weren’t as tight with running later in the day. I need to remember this!

I also did a hallmark workout this evening. I am rapidly running out of Christmas movies and will have to create a workout for regular hallmark movies soon!

Tonight I did: Bridges, squats, pushups, dips, reverse lunges, burpees, crunches, reverse crunches, lateral lunges, bicep curls, and froggers. I held 8lbs in each hand and did a minute of high knees between exercises.

Well, not an amazing day, but I survived:)

Happy Friday Eve:)

I’m so glad today was Thursday and tomorrow is Friday! I so don’t like having Monday professional days because by Friday, you’ve forgotten you had a day without students!

Teaching:

Today felt very mixed up. We started writer’s workshop this morning and it went quite well, though we had planned way too much. We got through a video about polar bears which was a really good documentary called Growing Up Polar. It was about an orphaned polar bear taken in by the Toronto zoo. We also made our polar bear habitats this afternoon. It was so neat to see how different they are and one child actually commented on that! We also had the chance to play outside today as it wasn’t raining for a bit:). On top of this all planning and prep for next week was completed:)

Exercise:

I came home and went directly out for a run. I can’t believe how much my Achilles bothers me until it warms up. It takes about a kilometer before it stops talking:(. I got 3.65km done which was good enough for a Thursday night, especially as I think I might end up running twice tomorrow.

Since my runs and workouts were finally equal, I also got to watch a hallmark movie and do a workout tonight. I ended up doing a minute of jogging between these exercises: bridges, crunches, burpees, squats, dips, mountain climbers, reverse lunges, curtsy lunges, plié squats, pushups, reverse crunches, froggers and bicycle crunches. It was nice to get back to this routine!

Movie:

Tonight I watched Nostalgic Christmas which was fine. I didn’t like the ending when the girl decided to take over her father’s shop at the drop of a hat. Wouldn’t they require more thought??? I know, I need to suspend reality!

Knitting:

I am attempting my date night sweater again. It seems like I have to start every knitting project five times😖. I hate to imagine how much I’d accomplish if I could start just once!

Eating:

I need to get back on track as the scale made me cry this morning. It’s such a slippery slope to where I used to be! Today I’ve had: rice cake with Pb, cheese and jam, yogurt with granola, apple and peanut butter, blood orange, cucumber and cheese, cookies. It’s still not great, but better than it has been lately.

Well I’m going to bed early as I’m getting up early for a workout with Lyndsay.

ProD

So ProD day, contrary to popular belief, is not a day off for me. I had to sit in a meeting all day. Can you tell how many times I’ve been bugged about this all day?!?!😖

Exercise:

Thankfully I started my day with a workout with L. It was tough to get out of bed and get going, but I am always so happy when I’m done. I must have been partially asleep though as I kept knocking the emergency stop button on the treadmill so my average pace was horrible today. I however know that I got up to 7.5 for my fast intervals, so I’m happy.

We also did some floor work that involved planks which demonstrated how long it has been since I’ve done that! I need to figure out how to put them into the Hallmark workouts! We also did some flies, pulldowns, and rows so I guess it was an upper body and abs day- not a bad thing for me!

Work:

My seminar today was not very successful as this woman was saying the same thing she has said the other six times I’ve seen her. I was told that our whole school had to go to this, but it really was a waste for me, which really bugs me because there are so many things I want to learn about!

Food:

I signed up today for Fresh Prep which is one of those services that delivers the ingredients and recipe to you and you then cook. The first week is half price so I wanted to try it, but I am very nervous about doing this as I always am about these programs that automatically bill every week/month. I am wondering how difficult it is going to be to cancel if I want to, whether it will be econominally smart for me to do this, how many meals I’ll get out of it, whether I will just spend more with still going to the grocery store, and of course, whether I will get sick. I guess we shall see.

Reading:

On the way home I stopped and picked up my Bookclub book, but today I managed to get the kids Bookclub book done. It was Chester and Gus by Cammie McGovern. The book is about a service dog who fails his test and is subsequently bought by a family with an autistic son. The book is told from the dog’s point of view which was very cool and imaginative. It was in some ways a sad book, but also one that makes you really think about bonds and communication.

Knitting:

I have also spent a lot of time knitting since finishing the book as I wanted to have both toques ready for Sarah to check out tomorrow. This one I think is going to be too wide and short but at least she can decide if she likes the colour and the pattern.

I have since started a Date Night too for myself in some very old Bouquet yarn. I’m not sure it’s going to work, but we shall see.

Well I need sleep as I’m thinking about running before work tomorrow.

Gets Better as it Goes

The day was tough at work, but outside of work, it was lovely.

Exercise:

It was great to get back to working out with Lyndsay! I really loved how my new Garmin successfully tracked both my treadmill run and my cardio session. We did intervals and I actually got up to 7.6km/hr which is fast for me. On the cardio we did reverse lunges, squats with overhead press, burpees, bicep curls, sit ups, jump squats and five jumping jacks between each of these. I was definitely a sweaty mess by the end, but a happy, sweaty mess.

Teaching:

It was another tough day with the kids. We got through calendar, music, addition math games, and some polar bear learning.

I felt like I spent the day talking about kindness, that rules apply to everyone and the idea of persevering. One of these days I’d like to actually teach some content!

Socializing:

I met up with two friends for our annual Dine Out dinner. We went to Chicha downtown which is Peruvian food. It was a very small restaurant and the tables were very close together, but it was wonderful food!

Sorry for the poor picture- it was a very dark restaurant. I had the quinoa salad, the crispy cauliflower, the ceviche and then fruit for dessert. It was my friend’s turn to pick the restaurant and she definitely doesn’t pay as close attention to the dessert as I do🤣. My favourite part was the ceviche as it had a ton of seafood in it, along with pieces of orange which was really good.
